Comments for Battle of Ontario....

Barret Jackman? I wasn't aware Ottawa had a need for "underachieving defenceman who will never live up to his calder winning season expectations".

Speaking of Heatley, Burke clearly sticking up for Murray here.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=282128

Or maybe just wanting to hear his own voice again now that the playoffs are over. Hard to tell sometimes...

Gravatar Don Brennan with his SJ thoughts.

Gravatar That linked back to here Don. What are one of us missing?

Gravatar Noel Gallagher had better insights...what about Steen + Backman?

Gravatar Burke's view is interesting considering the Pronger backstory....

Gravatar Whoops.

Gravatar
Burke's view is interesting considering the Pronger backstory....

Did Pronger ask his GM for a trade or did he put it to the media first? I believe that was Burke's point.

Do let us know if he's a hypocrite.

Gravatar Actually I found it for you Gee:

"Lowe admitted Saturday that defenseman Chris Pronger has officially requested a trade and that the team has heard from his agent.

"We've been aware of it for a period of time," Lowe told reporters before the start of Saturday's draft. "Just let me say, yes, we have heard from his agent, that [Pronger] prefer to be traded."

-ESPN June 25th.

Sounds to me like Pronger went about it the right way (according to Burke), and asked privately to be traded.

Sorry Gee, your campaign against anything and anybody Maple Leafs will have to move on to another pasture.

Gravatar Pronger put it to his team and then it was leaked. (I'm not 100% it was by him or his agents though).

This is the same as Ottawa, although it seems clear now that Heatley's agents were the source of the leak.

I agree that's unacceptable.

Gravatar Ya, Pronger is a bit of a douche but Lowe admits to knowing weeks before the media figured it out.

Seems like we all knew about Heatley's request the same day Murray found out.

My only criticism of Burke on this whole thing is that he's criticizing JP Barry and that can come back to haunt him. I tried to find out which players JP Barry represents but couldn't dig it up.

I appreciate Burke's aggressiveness, but sticking his neck out on this seems pretty pointless. All he's done is side with another GM he will probably never trade with and piss off a player and an agent.

Surely he thought this through before talking. Surely?

Gravatar For more context, check posts like this one a few days before Lowe's confession:

The timeline, the part of the season, the way it was leaked then quite quickly confirmed by the GM, these are all actually quite similar.

Other people who see similarities, include the guys over at the Edmonton Sun. Surely they would know?

It is possible, just possible that it's you that are the one blind when it comes to anything blue and white (I guess red white and blue now)?

Gravatar JP Barry is Sundin's rep. That's all you need to know.

Gravatar Seems like we all knew about Heatley's request the same day Murray found out.

Check your timeline. It just seems that way.

Gravatar Also, we should get a hat-tip post to Mlakar, particularly in light of the way other people have recently acted.

Gravatar From the Mirtle Post:

The reasons — or reason — have also come out, with Pronger having requested a trade earlier in the season due to his wife's desire to leave northern Alberta.

Did you catch that bold bit? Your link actually proved Pronger told his team privately long before the media found out. Did Pronger eventually leak the info? Maybe. Maybe not. You yourself admitted there is no proof of this. One could assume that months of Lowe talking to teams about Pronger led to it leaking out. One could also assume Pronger leaked it? Or maybe his wife? Or maybe Batman leaked it?

When you find a link that says Prongers agents leaked it to the press before he told Lowe, please do pass it along.

From all indications, Pronger went about it in the way Burke seems to be in alignment with:

"For a player to quietly and professionally ask for a trade, that's fair ball for me."
-Brian Burke, Toronto Star, today.

I see no contradiction.

I do see a pointless public display by Burke however. What good could possibly come from this? I doubt Toronto were on Heatley's list anyway? So yes, I criticize Burke for that, and the Leafs of many things. I may be skewed in opinion for my team, but I'm not as blind as some people around here, not naming names...

Gravatar Has Burke come out and stated his position on the Iran elections yet?

Gravatar I see no contradiction.

It got leaked a few weeks before deadline, and was only confirmed by Lowe after every media outlet had it.

It was a forced-hand move.

It is -very- similar to Heatley's situation in that respect, at least.

Gravatar Good God...

Gravatar Maybe Wayne Gretzky's ex-roomate's girlfriend leaked it?

You don't know who did and it may seem like a lot of things and you might even be right, but a jury would throw you out for insufficient evidence by 9:05am so give it up already...

Gravatar Onto something new:

The Sedin's are asking for a crazy contract in Vancouver. If they would take a 5 year deal, would Ottawa fans be interested in a Heatley package for the twins?

Gravatar I want Kovalchuk , White and a tlanta's pick for Heater ,Spezza, and Ottawa's pick.

Gravatar You don't know who did

I never said I did. This ain't clue.
So assuming nothing about who leaked what, the situation is, from the outside, quite similar, right? Pronger mentioned he was unhappy with some things a few months before (so did Heatley). And both got leaked by -somebody- in mid June and only then were they confirmed by the respective GMs, who were then more or less forced to make a deal.

be interested in a Heatley package for the twins?

Pass.

Gravatar I want the LA deal. With the pick.

Gravatar I do see a pointless public display by Burke however.

It's in Burke's interest in the division and if he's trying to cook a deal together for Heatley to be undervalued.

So it's not -completely- pointless.

Gravatar Also, as GM of Team USA... he's probably happy to introduce any doubts he can to the Canadian media on the worth of Heatley on Yzerman's 2010 team...

Gravatar It's in Burke's interest in the division and if he's trying to cook a deal together for Heatley to be undervalued.

That could be it. Although Heatley and his agent already made their best efforts to accomplish that don't you think?

As far as the Sedin's, obviously it would be a sign and trade scenario. The reason I ask is that Vancouver might actually send the two-for-one if they think they'll lose them anyway. $12M for both players would handcuff Murray though, if a decent D-Man is on the wish list for the team.

Sounds like Boumeester wants to be out west so neither Ontario team are in thde running, although both GM's would be smart to try.

Boumeester and Schenn would suit me just fine. I also hope Van Ryn can stay healthy, he was excellent last season during his rare appearances.

Gravatar Muppet, you're forgetting the Murray and Burke have a longstanding friendship. Many consider them very good friends (which some say was the case when Murray "mysteriously" placed Gerber on waivers again and Burke "mysteriously" instantly picked him up).

I think this is a case of a friend trying to deflect heat off another friend. By calling Heatley out on a pulpit, he deflects any attention Murray would get for not seeing this coming AND helps Murray in that Heatley's continuing damage to his reputation reduces his need to be picky on where he wants to be traded. Now its a "just get me out of Canada" situation with Burke harping on him too.

Gravatar Interesting notion, DT.

Gravatar Muppet, you're forgetting the Murray and Burke have a longstanding friendship.

I didn't realize they were good friends, but I did mention earlier this ordeal felt like a GM sticking up for another GM. So I guess that makes sense.
Does this mean Sens fans will show appreciation towards Brian Burke for going to bat for your own GM?

I'll guess no. And would expect nothing less.

Gravatar It's probably a combination of some legitimate viewpoints he's always held, some camaraderie, and some viewpoints he holds now associated with his current jobs and city.

And whenever the balance is close and Burke gets to go in front of a microphone, well we all know which way that's going to end up....

Gravatar Burke is a loudmouth. Burke is a chest beater. Burke loves the microphone.

I agree with all that.

What Brian Burke is not, however, from what I've seen, is a man with adjustable principles. If he likes and respects Murray it's genuine and has nothing to do with his geographical relation or new job in Toronto. He was giving Murray credit when he was a GM in Anaheim when he didn't have to. Burke loves himself, but he seems to enjoy commemorating others almost as much. The interview with him and Wilson where they talked about Quinn and Lamorello as their best buddies almost made me gag it was so filled with man-love.

Gravatar Speaking fo man-love, any word on what Sundin is doing next season?

Gravatar What Brian Burke is not, however, from what I've seen, is a man with adjustable principles.

Only because you choose to exclude evidence like that presented above.

Burke talks a lot. And a lot of what he says go directly against what he does. From signing the Sedins and speaking of big primarily North American type forwards to walking both sides of the agent line to talking about respect and then calling out pretty much every single goalie he ever found in public forums to talking about being accommodating and trading Zezel as far away from his sick wife as he could...

He's not necessarily a bad guy, but he's certainly not the wise old sage in the league, or even the guy with the most integrity.

Gravatar I like the Michalek and Vlasic trade, provided the deal is sweetened with some kind of swap of draft picks in which Ottawa benefits.

Gives Ottawa a guy they can put in to a top 6 forward spot, improves the D, and by fills 2 roster spots.

If the Sedin twins would sign for moderate money (highly unlikely) I actually wouldn't mind those guys in Ottawa. But I think their salary demands will put them way out of reach...

Gravatar Only because you choose to exclude evidence like that presented above.

I thought we agreed you had no evidence? Pick a lane hombre.

Gravatar No evidence as to intent or what happened behind the scenes. From what IS externally observable, the situations are basically identical.

Gravatar Pronger privately asked for a trade Months earlier, according to Lowe, so they are nothing alike.

Are you just arguing for the sake of it now, or drunk?

Gravatar Are you just arguing for the sake of it now, or drunk?

Heatley and Murray had discussions months ago too. This much is clear from both the agents and Murray's versions of the story. Ottawa may have thought they'd have time/opportunity to make him happy. So might have the Oil.

The transition from an unhappy situation to an ultimatum is at best unclear in both situations.

You're pretending to have some secret insight when you have none.

You're pretending that through that magical looking glass you seem some tangible difference between two situations, one of which is ongoing. That's nonsense.

And you're pretending that Burke is some kind of bastion of integrity, when multiple instances, like those mentioned above, plainly support the viewpoint that he is not. Rather, he touts whatever viewpoint serves his interests at the time.

Are you just arguing for the sake of it now, or drunk?

Puck off.

Gravatar The Vermette thing was comical, finally ending when another Sen fan called your bullshit.

This run of yours though takes the cake.

Have a great weekend.

Gravatar Glad I could entertain. Nothing's funnier that trying to watch a guy who identifies with sock puppets attempt to string together a coherent argument. Sesame street and Kermit were supposed to be a starting point, Muppet, not the height of your intellectual development.

But yeah, enough of your nonsense already. You like Burke, you think he's great, you think he's not 'a man with adjustable principles', and the bulk of evidence flies in the face of all of that. So good on ya.

It's like arguing with a goldfish. Hey look! Castle!

Gravatar My name has nothing to do with jim Henson. It's a British thing. You wouldn't understand because your a small town wanker.

Your right. Both situations were identical. Despite all the vast differences. In one post you agree you know no evidence that pronger leaked anything then you say he allegedly did? Your the fucking hypocrite, not Burke. Read your own posts for christs sake!

Gravatar I thought our Muppet was more like Oscar...after all he does live in a garbage can and all!

Gravatar Muppet, if you had any idea how ironic any of what you just said was, you'd be a genius.

Since you don't, and you've now plainly resorted to personal attacks in a clear violation of whatever semblance of ROE the BoO had, let me put it equally plainly: you're a bloody fool.

I'll save the rest of my thoughts for a more deserving forum.

Gravatar Alanis Morrisette and Gee. That makes two of you from Ottawa who have no clue what the word ironic means!

You personally attacked me first. Puck off? At least have the balls to just say what's on your mind, son. Seems years of afraidsson has rubbed off on you! Just drop the gloves instead of this shooting the puck at me after the whistle.

Vermette is a superstar and Pronger is the same as Heatley. Can't wait to hear what's next!

Gravatar Summertime heat heading up to draft day!

This what happens when the teams don't get to battle on the ice - it ends up on the blogs!
