Comments for Battle of Ontario....

I'd say Peter Chiarelli because he traded away a guy who scored approximately 84% of his goals without the help of the team's top centre.

Oh, that's right. He didn't.

(I'm not letting you off that easy )

Antropov has 12 points. Burke got a 2nd round pick for him.

Vermette has 12 points. Murray got a 2nd round pick AND a starting goalie for him.

Who is the better GM?

Gravatar Uhm
Ottawa Senators: 6, 4, 2
Toronto Maple Leafs: 1, 7, 5

Worst GM in the league???
Take a wild guess.

Gravatar Muppet, you should stay away from stats for a while...stick to your knitting son.

Gravatar Sorry, I would like to ad that I agree with Anshu and also point out that the #2 pick turned into Robin Lehner GAA: 0.923.
And that Lehner will likely be Ottawa'a backup next year. Oh, and that he is physically bigger than your "monster"

Gravatar sorry, obviously that's supposed to be "save percentage"

Gravatar Our GM got a 6'3" Swedish goalie for free. Yours bought one.

He also drafted a stud D-man. Yours bought one.

Gravatar There's also a problem of sample size - Leclaire has played in far more games than Gustavsson, which makes the whole thing pointless. Leclaire was at .910 until recently, if I recall correctly.

Gravatar Tim, while I'm psyched about Lehner as well, I imagine him seeing at least a year in Bingo before hitting the big league. So we're two years out. He should be solid backup material by Leclaire's last year, starter soon thereafter.

Gravatar Unless he just(in) Pogges it.

Gravatar Wow, Lehner is already 6'4 and 225 - in two years how big will he be! My only regret is that he's not a shut-down defencman with a mean streak.

Gravatar My only regret is that he's not a shut-down defencman with a mean streak.

That'd be Cowan.

Gravatar My only regret is that he's not a shut-down defencman with a mean streak.

No worries. Lehner will drop the gloves if the D-men don't.

http://www.hockeyfights.com/play...m/players/ 13256

Gravatar That'd be Cowan.

So Cowan is the next great Senators defenseman now. How soon we forget Brian Lee and Erik Karlsson.

Gravatar Who is the better GM?

Don't forget Kubina for exelby.

Gravatar Exelby for Kubina was actually a four player swap that including Colin Stuart who the Leafs packaged to get Calgary's 2nd rounder, which they then traded for their own 2nd rounder from Chicago, and then after that used it to get one of the leagues most exciting young players Phil Kessel.

The complexity of Brian Burke is probably overwhelming for Ottawa fans whose GM's patterns are as predictable as:
Trade for for Mike Comrie
Don't re-sign Mike Comrie
Trade again for Mike Comrie
Don't re-sign Mike Comrie

Perhaps Murray can give up yet another asset for Milke Comrie and make it three times?

Awesome!

Gravatar So Cowan is the next great Senators defenseman now. How soon we forget Brian Lee and Erik Karlsson.

So now who's reading into comments? Is Cowan not a shut-down D-man with a mean streak?

Gravatar Is Cowan not a shut-down D-man with a mean streak?

Not sure. Did I miss his NHL debut?

Hey DC, it was you who mentioned Gustavsson and the elusive .900 save percentage. I remember now.

Whattya think, will Leclaire get down below .850 before he goes down with his 9000th injury?

Gravatar Burke did this. We win.

Gravatar Not sure. Did I miss his NHL debut?

Not one comment says nor suggests he is or was a shutdown D-man with a mean streak in the NHL.

Gravatar Hey DC, it was you who mentioned Gustavsson and the elusive .900 save percentage. I remember now.

Actually it was leaf hamlet constantly ripping on tosakla for having a sub-.900 sv % while at the same time calling gus "fricking awesome" when gus was below it as well.

However, if the starter doesn't have a sv% over .900 or have a winged wheel on the front of the jersey, that team probably isn't going to be playing in mid-April.

And a sub.900 sv% means a lot of -'ve points in the BoOB.

But you still have exelby.

You lose.

Gravatar Gustavsson has played 6 games. After Pascal Leclaire's first six games, he had a .920 sv%.

Not to mention Leclaire has a 2.76 GAA, versus Jonas' 2.99.

See, I can use statistics, too!

Gravatar To clarify,

The error Muppet made was as a result of The Sun and The Star reporters taking their cue from Doug Maclean who ripped off Gus Katsaros of MLHS and screwed up the 'stat'.

Gravatar When a common-knowledge statistic is challeged, it should probably be verified with a quick look at the official stats records. We're razzing the hell out of Muppet for fun.

Gravatar Where can I send my "Thank you Gus Katsaros" card?

Gravatar comparing cowen or wiercoch with lee or karlsson seems misguided. The sens have an enviable combination of size and skill in those 4. If they lost their entire nhl defense tomorrow, they could still field a better team than the leafs.

Gravatar SuperSixSens - come on now, that's kind of ridiculous.

Gravatar Maybe just a little. Sens don't even have a better team than the Leafs in the last week WITH their defence core.

Toronto 7 points behind Ottawa. 5 games left head to head. No problemo!

THM, your sticking bamboo under my fingernails here!

Gravatar Word is Murray traded Vermy because he was one of the rabble-rousers on the team (read, he had fun...here in Ottawa. Don't laugh!).

The Senators have always blamed our underachievement on goaltenders. Never mind that the two times we did well in the playoffs, Patrick Lalime was our #1 (vs. the Devils in the day) and Emery was our #1 (a few short years ago). Neither are likely to be hall of fame quality, though.

Interestingly, we never really needed a stellar "G" when we had a good "D". I recall a pedestrian Ron Tugnutt gettign a 1.76 GAA or something ludicrous.

Our D now sucks donkey balls. When you have to throw Campoli, Kuba, Carkner, Picard on the ice don't be surprised if your goaltender gets pelted with rubber harder than a hooker at election time.

The next game between our team should be a good one.

P.S. Leafs still suck.

Gravatar THM, your sticking bamboo under my fingernails here!

Should I post my step-by-step image supported instructions on how to use the nhl.com stats pages?

Gravatar You know a way to find out how many assists a specific player had in relation to another player?

Other than going through all 81 boxscores?

Do tell.

I guess I was a fool for believing that The Star would fact-check a statistic like that. Paid the price for jumping too fast on it.

Oh well... sue me!

Gravatar I agree Steve in Fallowfield, the next game should be pretty good. The last one was tight as well.

One thing is for certain there isn't much of a gap between the two teams right now. The only difference is that Ottawa got some wins off the hop while Toronto were fucking awful.

Lately it seems fortunes have changed, but Toronto can't just be "in" games getting a point for long or we'll be right out of the picture. We need a W against Carolina pretty bad.

Gravatar Muppet your leafs need wins pretty bad in general. You got destroyed in the comments section and it's pretty sad to see not checking common stats. Somewhat of an amateur move that's laughable.

P.S. I like how even though you're getting wreaked, you're still fighting back. I like that. you really do personify the leafs: A team that sucks but keeps trying and trying hopelessly.

Gravatar Other than going through all 81 boxscores?

You only needed to go through 5.

Gravatar oh and no need to sue you, your embarrASSment is enough

Gravatar That's not true THM, the first 5 only show 2 assists. That leaves 65 more to comb through. Fuck that!

Sens4life welcome back. Where have you been? I'll guess prison?

Gravatar Or have you just been bar hopping getting wreaked?

Gravatar the first 5 only show 2 assists

If you go through Game-by-game you need only look at the first (Apr 12) to show two assists. The rest you pick games with '81' showing in the 'scorers' and a quick click gives you the summary.

He only scored in 29 games. So that alone cuts your search by ~1/3.

2 minutes to get all that info.

Gravatar it may be a bit ridiculouus to suggest 4Ahlers are probably better than 4 Nhlers. Then again, if the latest incarnation of the makebelieves could be relegated, is there any doubt they would be?

Gravatar Our D now sucks donkey balls. When you have to throw Campoli, Kuba, Carkner, Picard on the ice don't be surprised if your goaltender gets pelted with rubber harder than a hooker at election time.

Yet the Sens are tied for 10th in fewest GA and tied for 3rd best PK.

Gravatar 2 minutes to get all that info.

And we come full circle. I trusted The Star. I didn't make the stat up. It was in a newspaper. I didn't think it was necessary to comb through stats.

What else do you want from me at this point?

Gravatar I trusted The Star

Man, don't dig the hole any deeper for yourself. Keep that kind of admission quiet!

Gravatar Which paper had the Leafs above the Sens in last year's final point tally?

Because Muppet did.

Gravatar That one was just me.

Weird, I didn't think you weren't posting here when that happened. Or were you but under a different name?

Whatever, I've had some brain farts over the years. Guess I'm not getting a raise huh?

Gravatar I was notch back then or geeiwonder or thm or bered or anonymous.

But no matter who i was, i at least the goddamn courtesy to have at least cursory knowledge of what the fuck i was talking about.

no worries: Muppet is actually a football fan. By 'fan' i mean/of course hoser who stands in the pun asking you what just happened..,

Gravatar It would be courteous to maintain the same name all along such that Muppet et al. would have the opportunity to razz the hell out of us for making the same goofball error we've been all over him for today. Because, in the end, this is really just a school playground.

Gravatar 1) It's COWEN not COWAN.

2) if youve watched the Sens games, youd know about 10 goals this year have completely not been Leclaire's Fault

Gravatar Ah yes bar hopping, haha. I'm surprised you remember me, I've been very busy but just enough time to check out the local blogs. Don't get me wrong I love the back and forth Sens(4 Life), Leafs arguments, everyone has a brain fart in a while and yeah like THM said, don't dig yourself deeper! The star.. psh..

Gravatar But no matter who i was, i at least the goddamn courtesy to have at least cursory knowledge of what the fuck i was talking about.

Maybe I'll just change my name? That way I won't have to be responsible for what I said in previous incarnations.

Nah, think I'll just continue to have a pair... and live with my decisions.

Gravatar Ah yes bar hopping, haha. I'm surprised you remember me

I never forget a nemesis!

As far as digging myself deeper, you know I won't heed that advice. Nothing that's said here will ever make me lose a second of sleep so why hold back?

Anyway, welcome back.
