As a fellow scientist, I really enjoyed your blog. |

Hi Jeff, and thanks! |

Hi Tara. |

As I mentioned on my blog (not that I'm plugging my blog) I think that polio shouldn't be hitching its wagon to bird flu, but rather getting in bed with the anti-vaccine zealots. |

Hi Dave, and thanks! Interesting you should mention polio, as I recall reading recently that there are still cases of this disease in the US, even now. Absolutely--and I blogged about the MN cases here and here. And definitely, the old ones shouldn't be ignored. As I've pointed out a few times on here, even with the uproar about bird flu, our "moldy oldy" regular flu kills ~36,000 every year in the U.S. alone. That's nothing to sneeze at, pardon the pun. |

As I mentioned on my blog (not that I'm plugging my blog) I think that polio shouldn't be hitching its wagon to bird flu, but rather getting in bed with the anti-vaccine zealots. Very true. Measles and polio are ones that are so close to eradication, and yet it just takes a minor hiccup in the system to cause serious outbreaks (for example, there's a current outbreak of measles in a Kenyan refugee camp, partly due to poor conditions, partly due to the unwillingness of people in that reason to accept vaccination since they distrust the authorities). It would seem some folks in the US want us to return to that type of situation. |
