My academic/research advisor is a pediatric gastroenterologist and he was telling me about RotaShield a couple days back. He said he felt it was sad that the vaccine was pulled because inteussecption is not an uncommon sequelae if rotavirus infection, and the Wyeth's withdrawal of the vaccine in the US in Oct 1999 was tantamount to a stop worldwide. Like you said, 600k deaths worldwide is a big, big deal, and I am glad to see some new comers back to pick up the RotaShield slack. |

I read in ELPAIS that another problem with this vaccine development was that the individuals where the vaccine was tested were most of them caucasian and from developed countries (80%), and both the action of the vaccine and the progression of the disease are enormously dependant on how well nourished the individuals are... |
