I'm surprised some people still have opposable thumbs. They didn't recognize the Washington Mmt???? Were they raised by wolves? Many years ago my bookclub read one of my all-time-favorite books about the Civil War. One of my friends, who indeed has a Master's degree, had to give up the book midway because she couldn't keep straight which side was the Union and who were the Confederates.

And that's why they don't have representation... and Baltimore does.

Dude, they're everywhere. But, honestly, looking around at a big diverse city, I can say that there are a lot of people in this country who wouldn't recognize the Washington Monument and I wouldn't put it at the top of my list of priorities for them. I'm just sayin'.

I'm not arguing that recognizing the Washington Monument should be item #1 on the National Heritage Quiz, but I did assume (obviously, incorrectly) that the average visitor to D.C. might have some foreknowledge of the major sights. And honestly, it was his last line that really got me - totally flat, with no hint of "I've heard of that."
Re. a monnumint for Mini-sohda - it's not in D.C., but it's nearby:

But you have to admit, the Washington Mmt is rather unique and I would assume an easily identified tourist attraction.

Yes, I would assume that anyone visiting DC as a tourist would recognize it.
