Hey! You got the English prof to delurk... "journalizes"??? ;-)
On a more germane note: you're right to point out that Oden's compensation isn't out of line with comparable institutions. News reports like this one seem designed, however, to point out the disparity between executive compensation and 'the average worker' (who is unnamed, uncited, and only present as the presumably shocked audience). In other words, instead of a conversation about highly-paid SLAC presidents, shouldn't we engage in a dialogue about the increasing divide between the richest 1% and the rest of us? But that doesn't happen because university presidents serve as such lovely symbols of the *presumed* privileges of the ivory tower: wealth (hee!), cultural capital (heh), political capital (!?!), and incredible liberal influence (ha!).
Thanks in general for your blog! (Do you use WordPress?)

Adriana, I picked "journalizes" only because "journalisticalates" was even uglier. I was trying to make a little bit of fun of the piece, since I didn't think it was quite as good as it should have been - either by describing the national higher-ed context better, or linking this issue to that of income disparities in the U.S. But then again, I didn't talk about those issues in my post, either. (Thanks for the compliments; I am enjoying writing this blog. I use a Mac-only app called Sandvox to do it.)
