I think the pub you're remembering is Hap's, on Erie in East Hyde Park (near Bangkok Bistro).

jen,
Massenez crème de gingembre is ginger liqueur. party source carries the Massenez brand (i have their crème de cassis -- black currant-- and crème de peche -- peach), but i've never come across the ginger. i've always wanted to find the crème de violettes!

Good lord, are you supposed to drink that or use it as a centerpiece?
I went to the World Cup in Foxboro back in '94, and saw Italy beat Spain. We joined the celebration in Little Italy, and I can't really describe (at least not in a concise Haloscan comment) the amazing sense of excitement and energy that surrounded the entire event, from the match itself to the traffic jam out of the stadium to the parade of Lamborghinis driven by soccer players, to ordering beers for my 15-year-old brother and drinking them in the street, to getting a waitress to hang out with us all night by asking her if she knew the one person in Massachusetts that I did (she didn't).
It was almost a higher plane of existence. Of course, we stayed drunk for more than 24 hours straight, but it was more than that. I guess the shorthand description is "good vibes," but that's only part of it. I guess it was a conscious awareness of how simultaneously big and small the world is.

Hey, Jen, I think Amanda's right: Hap's, on Erie Ave.

Hap's, indeed... thanks, Amanda and Louis! I remember being there for a match around 5:30 am in '02.
With the games being held in Germany instead of South Korea/Japan this time around, it should be a little easier to watch the games. I'll bet Hap's is still the place to be.

I would be all "Aussie, aussie, aussie, oi, oi, oi." except that I have no idea what pretty much any of the contents of that alleged drink are.

There are a few in my neighborhood that get fired up for the world cup - Cock and Bull, Mulligan's, and I'd bet Fat Shannon's. But not to the degree you are talking about.
Out in Phoenix I'd watch the matches at Bandersnatch... a fantastic, well-seasoned bar I wish was still aroung.

And right now sitting here at the bar at Downunder Anna says they're happy to accomodate.

A quick shout-out to willa frank, for giving everyone the low-down on Massenez crème de gingembre.
The coolest thing about blogging is all the random shit you learn from cool people, 'round the block or worldwide. Second coolest thing is when people agree with you (Dirk) that the "drink" is "alleged."
It's in keeping with Travis' theme about the great big small world. I'd love to experience a World Cup. Or an Olympics. Or even a taste of Massenez crème de gingembre with willa frank and Dirk.
I'm still stumped on that Jaggard Lemon Myrtille, however.

I think you're going to have trouble finding the Jaggard Lemon Myrtle (different spelling, looks to be the same) in the US. Jaggard appears to be an Australian joint, take a look at http://www.jaggard.com.au/public...gard-
lemon.html

Lemon myrtle is an Aussie bush tucker plant. It has become very fashionable down here. Despite that, it is a very tasy addition to many dishes. Lemon myrtle yoghurt is to die for, darling.

I played soccer growing up and it's a great sport, but only to play. I can't watch it unless I'm right there on the field. Same with baseball.
But it's good to know the USA still has a soccer team... wasn't sure the past 10 years.

I just want to say, this is a pretty great weblog. They should put you up for one of those Koufax awards or something.

Thanks to Chris and Dirk for the lowdown on Lemon Myrtle. Sounds like the next big thing, silly award-winning drinks notwithstanding.
