I've been to a few art "happenings" in that district of LA, most of them very under the NPR radar. I love the views of downtown LA all lit up at night from that area ...
Is Al's Bar still alive?

Not sure. Is that a place I should check out?
I'm down with the warehouse art scene...lots of that in Houston when I was a pup, as well. In fact, between black box theatres and illegal raves, I've spent a good deal of my youth in warehouses.

I think Al's bar had its heyday during LA's rich punk scene in the late 70s. Its heavily graf'd and smells like 30 years of spilt bear and vomit. Not my scene, really, but worth a trip for the history alone.
Ya know, I missed out on the entire rave thing and I feel like there's a part of me that will never be whole.

I know a straight laced Mormon guy who used to go to raves in San Francicsco back when they were just called "warehouse parties."
