Eastern Michigan University in 1992 changed their mascot due to the pressure at the time from the media and small groups that claimed offensive.
EMU was the Hurons, they are now the Eagles.
During the battle to keep the Huron mascot, the Huron Indian tribe that is still associated with the area came forward and said it was an Honor and they wished EMU is keep the Huron as the mascot.
The small, unassociated Indians (re, non Huron Indians) that were making the fuss said that the Huron Indians didn't know what they were talking about and they were being pressured by the white man is say those things.
The mascot got changed.
EMU has lost a lot of donors because of the mascot change, especially after the Huron Tribe said they wished the mascot to stay.
I am one of the lost donors.
Not one other university in Michigan changed their Indian mascots and all are still in place.

This bugs the hell out of me. Just because I think some people are looking for stuff to get all worked up about.
Use your energy for something good! Like what you said in your post above!

I have recently posted about a similar issue. I agree with you, it's just a mascot. And why aren't there black mascots or figureheads?

They better NOT mess with my Irish! I'm ticked off enough about the other...but my Irish, oh no. Not gonna happen.
This whole thing just kinda burns my a$$. Why they think this is a positive thing I don't know. It's just stirring up a hornets nest. Plain and simple.

How about some non-offensive names, ie. no animals, plants or human ethnic derivations...
The Litigators?
Vindicators
Enforcers
