Pah-lease!

Hey DDT,
good come-back!

While Clinton was consumed with defending himself in court from messes he created like MonicaGate, Whitewater, Paula Jones etc. instead of governing our country, terrorists were bombing the WTC, overseas govt buildings and our warships. Too bad he was too busy to run the country.

And now he's campaigning to be the next Secretary General of the UN. The nerve.

>>> CLINTON LIED PEOPLE DIED

Thanks MattO. Glad you enjoyed it.

I also love the "CLINTON LIED PEOPLE DIED" interjection.

Hopefully his tax hike goes through on the rich soon so we can start paying down the budget deficit. We might need some more tax hikes by the end of this week as South Texas is ecvacuating as Rita heads our way.

Clinton doing an interview with Stephanopoulos would be like Bush doing a national interview with Karl Rove. How can anyone see him as a credible journalist?

It says something about the character of the man who breaks 200 years of presidential tradition to criticize his successor for political gain. Of course it's not like Dems cared about his character when he was getting his sausage smoked in the Oval Office either.

Your 'breaking 200 years of presidential tradition' rhetoric is hyperbolic garbage, Mike.

Teddy Roosevelt immediately comes to mind. First of all, his decision to run against Taft in hopes of a second presedency has to be seen as open criticism of Taft's policies which ended up not being as in line with those of TR's first administration as he assumed they would be.

Above and beyond that, TR was openly very critical of Woodrow Wilson on multiple occassions – possibly out of frustration for splitting the Republican vote betwen Taft and himself and leading to Wilson's election.

Roosevelt became a regular contributor (officially, "Editorialist at Large") with a widely read New York magazine, and there in print he openly scrutinized criticized many of Wilson's policies, particularly those concerning deteriorating European relations.

AVQ,
Your point re TR is well taken and serves the points being made. By actually naming a President who openly criticized his successor (and going back almost 100 years to do so!) you underscore the very point being made. Yes, 200 years of tradition may be hyperbole but it aint garbage. This is one of those 'exception that proves the rule' circumstances.

Further, TR criticized Taft and then ran for office against him. Isn't this exactly the point that JohnO is making- that Clinton is jabbing at GB the Greater b/c he wants to advance his own political career?

In fact Taft was reasonably successful as a president but TR's bickering and his egomanical run as an independent split the Republican vote and brought the mediocre racist, Woodrow Wilson into office. One can see the analogy with Clinton who is bashing the president and the presidency in order to stoke his own international political ambitions.

And can't you just admit that a former president criticizing the current president is just plain poor form (and smacks a bit of desperation, doesn't it!)?

"Selfishness personified"... I like it JohnO!

BTW, is anyone surprised that the desperate Dems managed to politicize a friggin hurricane?!! "And while we're blaming Bush for aiming a hurricane at black people let's try to repeal those tax cuts too!" Very classy indeed.

DDT,
Where are you in TX? I hope you and your family will be safe from this hurricane.

I blame Bush. He heard there was one more democrat left in TX so he aimed his last hurricane there

True that, Matt. I did have to jump into the way back machine to get the best known example of an ex-Prez publicly dissing a sitting administration. And yes, the point was largely to suggest that the 200 year tradition is over-reaching by 100 years or so to say the least. But if you can't count on the GOPerheads for hyperbolic rhetoric, then what use are they?

The parallels between TR and WJC had been noted, as had the fact that the squabbling between TR and Taft did indeed lead to the election of the President who codified segregation in America for the first time since the Civil War.

As far as conceding that it is "poor form" for an Ex-Prez to slam the current Prez, I'll only say there are far worse transgressions in this world than bad form. Hmm, I never thought you'd be one for all that political correctness claptrap.

Yeah, Delusional, Here's hoping you don't become the Deluged Democrat in Texas.

180 mph by tomorrow, and at the very least, the third most powerful Atlantic Basin storm on record. Y'all do everything big in Texas, don'tcha?

Keep yourselves safe.

Gravatar Seems to me the Teddy Roosevelt actually had the virtue of showing his hand: He threw his hat in the ring and then began appropriately enough to campaign on his own behalf. Unsurprisingly, Clinton's route is a whole lot more slick and sneaky. He is engaged in a covert campaign for his wife who has not yet announced her candidacy. It means that people who are not adept at reading the political winds will take his statements at face value as the wise opinings of an elder statesman, rather than understanding that they are campaign utterances, and then subjecting them to the appropriate scrutiny.

Gravatar Aren't all utterances from a politician in some way campaign spin?
=====================================
Thanks for the good wishes MattO.

We do not have a manadatory evacuation where I live (approx 30 miles north of HOU 5 miles from Bush Intercontinental Airport). Unfortunately or fortunately, Katrina has really caused hysteria here. Many people are evacuating that are not in the storm surge and mandatory evacuation areas. There are major shortages of gas. The gas supply in this area is already 1.5 days behind schedule in delivery. 13% of the country's gasoline products are refined here. You might consider gasing up all your cars this morning before prices spike again due to Rita.I'm afraid that some people may be stranded without gas tomorrow in there exodus to Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio. We are trying to do our civic duty and let the people who are most in danger out of here before us folks on higher ground. Models have just changed to possibly worst scenario for HOU so may have to put civic duty to aside.

We are staying unless they call for our area to evacuate. Very scary situation but we are going to follow the direction of our able Republican authorities. My fear for this evacuation is 1) the gas shortages, 2) that people may still be on the roads when the storm hits... the roads are literally parking lots heading north and I've spoken to neighbors who are talking about heading out tomorrow night.

Gravatar Remember Hurricane Floyd!?

http://lwf.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/ clim...tremes0999.html

I had 6 inches of water in my basement by then end of that storm. We had a basement that was fully carpeted and with finished walls , custom bar, an office, and playroom for the kids. Much was ruined and we had a few thousand dollars in damage.
My recollection is that the winds were 75MPH +. We could see 100 MPH winds with Rita. Floyd was the largest peacetime evacuation up to that point. I'm pretty sure Rita will be a larger evacuation.

The good side of people has turned up here. A coworker dropped off 12 gallons of water last night. Neighbors have made generous offerings of sharing there nonperishables with other neighbors. Most generous offering of all was a freezer filled with frozen marguaritas from one neighbor if they decide to leave town.

I'm heading out to try to buy some final provisions and get home to make final preparations(I hate cleaning the gutters!) The new forecast is worse than 3 hours ago possibly the worst as it is headed for Galveston Bay which means major storm surge problems.

We will continue to follow the warnings. No one is going anywhere fast on the highways here anyway.

Gravatar Prayers to you and yours, DDT (and clean those damn gutters).

matto

Gravatar Then come over and clean mine!

Funny to hear that you and I were both chased away by Floyd in different states. Our son was only 3 weeks old at the time or we would have stuck around, as we had been through Cat3s quite uneventfully in the past.

We waited about as long as we could for Floyd to turn north before boarding up and leaving. And of course, once we were good and stuck in the inland traffic crawl it turned north and only gave us a glancing blow. Apparently, what was good for us was not so good for you. . .

Stay safe.

Gravatar Well kids how bout another hurricane story from Uncle DDT

Remember Hurricane Emily?

http://www.csc.noaa.gov/crs/coha...emily/ emily.htm

Way back in 93 I loaded up the family truckster and headed to that wonderful beach vacation wonderland the Outer Banks of NC. At the time wild horses roamed the island. There was little development but now too many NYers and PAers and NJites found out about it. Anyway we drove down to NC on Saturday to our rental house. Sunday morning woke up to an hurricane warning and a mandatory evacuation. We decided to drive west and go to the first hotel we could find. We ended up in Raleigh NC until Wed of that week. This might seem like a major pain in the butt but we fell in love with the Raleigh area and have fond memories of that vacation. We spent Wed through Fri swimming in the roughest surf I've ever was in it was great for riding waves in on the boogie boards (all the kids loved it including the biggest kid)

My sister ended up moving to Raleigh. Someday maybe we'll move to Raleigh or the Outer Banks both are places we really enjoy visiting.

I think there is a mass hysteria going on here. People should have honored the needs of the people in the evacuation zones and instead have evacuated are hysteric and stuck on the highways. Some respect for your fellow citizens on the coast line was in order here and instead there are a lot of selfish people who put there own needs ahead of those who were most at risk. There is a fine line between protecting your family and having some respect for the people who are in most in danger.

It's gutter time.
