Sorry, but you are creating a straw man argument. Dubya, Rumy critics, who are in the majority now, do not want to continue social promotion. Social promotion comes from two sources in my experience as a teacher: parents who believe that "unfair teachers" are holding their little darlin's back, and administrators who won't stand up to them and don't know what to do with 15 year old 5th graders.
Middle school teachers tell me all the time that their decisions to retain are overridden by administrators. If you want to find the culprit in social promotion, look at a school system that lacks alternatives for students in need.

That was not a 'straw man' argument. If you are against 'social promotion' and argued against Bush/Rumsfeld in the expample then you are not part of the picture presented by the post.
It seems you agree that as our troops are to be prepared for battle so are our students to be prepared for the real world.
I also noted 'from personal experience' because I had three specific people in mind who I would not name because their views were shared in conversations over time and they don't blog that I know of.
