Gravatar The Republicans have abandoned their fiscal conservative base. I agree, let the Dems run the show for a few years… let the country see how Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Howard Dean run things. They will ensure our next President is a Republican. Maybe this will serve as a wake up to those who call themselves Republicans but spend like Democrats. Let the purge begin!

Gravatar I have to agree with Tony Blankley on this:

" While turning over the Congress to the Pelosi/Kennedy mob for even two years would be recklessly irresponsible -- particularly during a dangerous war -- there is no assurance the wilderness years would last only twenty-four months

Gravatar I really like MattO's idea of forcing the Dems to take some responsibility but I just can't root for them to take over because I think there is too much at stake.

If the Dems do take over they will simply blame their failures on the 'mess' that was left for them. And remember the rule: If you elect Democrats you will get better headlines. Thus people will feel better regardless of how bad things may get.

Gravatar As of yesterday, Robert Novak had the GOP lose at 21 seats. Not a debacle but still losing control. Thinking about this for a minute what will a Democratic House accomplish with the GOP controlling the Senate and WH? Not much. The suggestion that they would defund the Iraq war is ridiculous. They would get roasted alive if they are seen as not supporting our troops. A slim majority will not give them enough leverage to defund Iraq and there is always the possibility of shutting down the gov't.

They could call hearings and make life miserable for the Bush administration. This is a double edged sword. Democrats grilling Rumsfeld would be very entertaining and I doubt they would get the best of him. Also, if the economy turns down there is a great opportunity to blame it on the Democrats. Truman used this tactic. Now that Republicans have media outlets we can shut down the gov't and blame it on the Democrats.

Another criticism is that the Bush administration will not be able to get much done. The truth is that there is not much of the Bush plan that was going to get passed in the best of circumstances.

I don't want a landslide but losing 20 seats would set us up for 2008. Just enough power to get them in trouble. Of course, the Bush adminstration must not go wobbly but I think there is little chance of that. If he did seek a grand compromise on immigration or some other issue I think some Republicans would start impeahcment proceedings.

So, Matt, I understand your thinking and I agree. Let's make Pelosi, Conyers, Waxman, et al. the poster children for the Democratic party and then watch a truly conservative candidate win a landslide in 2008.

Gravatar Diego, I would never root for the dems. but I can't help but think that politics in our country can't get any worse. and we need the other party, approximately half of our elected officials, to take some ownership of our problems.

the dems, as a party, spend approximately 80% of there effort thinking of new ways to blame the world's problems on Bush. (The other 20% seems to go toward leaking nat'l security info to their pals in the press.) We need them to taste what it's like being in the position of find solutions rather than merely finding ways to blame others.

I know that we'll hear how everything is Bush's fault anyway, but I think the public will not be in the mood to hear it. The feeling will be that we elected them b/c they said they'll fix everything (never giving specifics of course), so they _better_ fix everything- no excuses.

There is also the slight possibility that the press would be a LITTLE more skeptical of the dems if the dem's decisions carry real consequence.

I'm not certain that the Republicans will win everything back in '08, but I think giving the dems 2yrs to show what they've got can only help out the republican cause.

Gravatar There is also the slight possibility that the press would be a LITTLE more skeptical of the dems if the dem's decisions carry real consequence.

Not the MSM. They are a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democratic party.
