Until Aquaman became Sword of Atlantis, I had always associated the character and title with a cleaner, more Silver Age style, and preferred it as such.
Since Butch Guice took over with the introduction of the new Aquaman and a sword & sorcery theme, I've come to associate Sword of Atlantis with a more rough-hewn, edgy style that depicts the undersea world as vast, mysterious and full of danger. I think this is the style that the essentially new title needs, especially with the large scope and larger-than-life characters leaping from the incredible storytelling mind of Kurt Busiek. As a side note, I hope he stays on the title for a long time. He has created a fantastic world and an incredible
Aquaman.
Searching through Google Images for the range of styles wrought by Ricardo Villagran and Phil Winslade, I saw that they can each draw in a manner that complements the run begun by Butch Guice. Given the choice, I would like to see Phil Winslade remain on the title unless DC locates someone even more appropriate. I think Villagran is great, but feel Winslade can capture an equally gritty look and deliver more of a dynamic impact. Paul Gulacy is a great artist, but I don't think he can render the action as fluidly as others could and his style is a bit of a departure from the look that's been established.
