And yeah, i have a feeling with the 52 stuff they just wanted to resolve the leftover mysteries and they did it whether it worked or not. Very underwhelming reveal, that completely contradicts continuity.

Ugh. I am really disappointed by the "reveal" of how Orin was transformed. That is it??? And what sort of mystical power allows a sunken town to be risen from the depths and, as a side effect, changes the wielder into a squid-man??? So NOT worth the wait of a year. Not satisfying or plausible. A let down, for sure. Hoping Aquaman #51 is a better read tonight.
