Great post, Tom. Thanks. (Although I think you're giving them a little too much credit to say that partisanship is the overriding motivation. It certainly is the principal motive for everything they do, but I'll just betcha there's a stinkin' healthy heap o' racism in the mix. Where there's smoke, there's fire ... and where there are rich old right-wing corporate white guys, there's racism. )

Thanks, Mic...ster Particular. You make a good point; I think I may have to do a whole follow-up post about it.

Is there any reason whatsoever to think that the situation in America today is remotely akin to the situation in Little Rock in 1957? In 2006, are there crowds of people marching to keep black kids out of school? How could I have missed such a huge story?

I'm not sure what you're trying to get at there, Thurmond. Are you defining anything less than Little Rock 1957 as not racist? Are you saying there are no civil rights violations today?
Let's be clear about this: the Bush DOJ isn't just not doing much about civil rights; they're actively hostile to the rights of minorities, at least in the area of voting rights. What's also clear to me is that if this president and this justice department had been in office in 1957, there would have been no federal intervention in Little Rock.

I agree - and you can take it further than that.
There is an explanation of the deeper truth about racism in the Bush administration on a liberal fake-news site (lushforlife.com) which gave me a new insight into these guys:
