When I saw you had returned (and loved) this, I was hoping we would get a review. Glad I wasn't disappointed. Excellent review.
I think Johnny Gossamer is probably modeled on Mike Shayne; meanwhile, the chapter titles are all titles used by Raymond Chandler, a much classier writer. I think the references (to the most rote and the most literary extremes of detective fiction) are a tip-off to another thing they're playing with in the movie: the tension between formula and art in the genre (or, I suppose, in any genre).
Also wanted to mention the awesome, jaw-dropping opening sequence. To say anything else about it would be to give too much away, but it is amazing.

You mean the flashback sequence, or the opening proper?

The flashback.

Actually, I don't know if that is technically a flashback, because although it does occur years before the present day, IIRC there's no present-day action preceding it. It's more prologue than flashback.

This one's on my list to rent. I love "Zero Effect" and this sounds somewhat the same alley.

Ah. Prologue. Yes.
I found it too disturbing. I was ready to leave the room.

Hmmm...okay. Well, in any case, it certainly signalled (correctly) that we were in for a wild ride.

All I know about this film is that I laughed my ass off all the way through it, and gave it two thumbs way, way up. I would highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't yet seen it.
