My dad would have punished me for the deed and for lying about it, weeks ago. These guys are almost unbelievable in the way they avoid taking responsibility for their actions. They're like rats. They figure if they can get their head (MSM) in the hole, the rest of the body will follow. That would be us, the average citizen.
I don't think it is completely working this time.

Excellent post, De.
He "knows" that he didn't and wouldn't. Why the extra layer? Why not just "I didn't"?
I wish I could remember...I'm fairly sure Bush or somebody used the same phrasing in some other (massively scandalous) context...but I can't recall what it was.
Anyway, it's kind of a 'tell', isn't it? Like he's distancing himself from the lie as well as the act.

Well parsed, Deborah! Gonzo's testimony ought to go swimmingly on Tuesday, don't you think?
Tom, you may be thinking of when Bush recently told the press something to the effect that there was absolutely no evidence of an inappropriate rationale for firing the US Attorneys.
You'd think that with all his experience at it, Bush would be a much better liar than he is. The dope really can't do anything right, can he?

A "tell" is exactly the right phrase. Read the full op-ed, it's riddled with tells, I just pulled out my favorites.

To his knowledge, he didn't...
Perhaps he was giving off subconscious signals. Tip your head to the left = keep this one. Tip it to the right = fire that one. Yeah, that must have been what happened. Only question is how was Kyle Sampson to know how to interpret the signals? And how could he be sure it was Gonzo's left and not his left? Maybe that's why David Iglesias lost his job. It wasn't politics; it was confusion.
