There are plenty of stupid people and not enough heroes or heroines, we just lost another heroine ...

Gravatar C) both and D) none of the above. Look, life is so sloppy that I can, given a paycheck and an editor's assignment, or just my own natural proclivity, go wherever and find someone who'll justify my contention that 1) Clinton supporters are a bunch of uneducated rednecks; 2) They're salt of the earth working people who've been needlessly maligned and without whom the Democrats have never won a national election; 3) Obama supporters are are a bunch of well-educated young idealists who've never been involved in the political process before; or 4) They're a bunch of elitist trendoids ready as of next January 21 to cut off grandma's oxygen so they can afford an iPod for their other hand. And I can just make 'em up if the deadline presses.

Mr. Simpson, assuming he exists, has many cousins who post comments at the Indianapolis Racist Star, which I hardily recommend not reading; some of them are no doubt real. At the same time, the math tells us his first national vote went to Kennedy, followed by one for the Civil Rights Act ramrod LBJ, McGovern over Nixon, Mondale over Reagan's second term, and lately Gore and Kerry. We might ask what he imagined he was voting for all those years, or we might just forget about it. Senator Obama certainly began his campaign treating even knowledgeable Democrats of the 60s and 70s as mere speed bumps. Did something change the math in the interim?

Gravatar aimai,
hey, if you get a chance could you shoot me an email address? eschatonmail@comcast.net

Gravatar This is the sort of story that seems utterly false. If Mr Simpson (really!) exists, either he is still a democrat because he is too fucking stupid to change his registration or he is kidding. There are many, many stupid people. A few of them vote. At least one Senator, Imohff (Idiot--OK), and many members of congress, are that stupid. Half the country has an IQ under 100. For every anamai at 130+, there is a voter at 70-. Its why we don't have a democracy.

The question you are asking is the one Franks addressed in What's the Matter with Kansas?. Its the same one that almost eliminated serious Marxist analysis. I do not know why people cannot see their own economic interests and believe, instead, in sparkle ponies and politicians.

I say use Mr. Simpson as an object lesson in why a vote for McCain puts you in bad company. Let's put Mr Simpson on TV and with a voice over that gravely intones "This is the republican voter. We can be more stupid together than any of us can be alone." Of course, I doubt anyone will get this guy on film, or if they can, find him competent enough to consent to the use of his image.

Gravatar drip, that's the best ad ever. Except that it has to be carefully crafted--you have to be sure people don't see themselves in it since they actually are as likely to identify themselves with poor mr. simpson as with some hypothetical other, smarter, voter. Still, I can see it. First Mr. Simpson explains that he's "heard he's a muslim" and then we cut to people saying thoughtfully that they've "heard the earth is flat" and they've "heard water runs up hill" and they've "heard the Iraq war is going well" and they've "heard that someone's brother in law repaid a personal loan on time..." The more things like that you pile up the better.

Gravatar "I don't know of any elite, effete, latte swilling, arugula eating, terrorist hugging, northeastern liberal who would ever dream, for a moment, of putting up an *actual muslim*"

Well, Minneapolis elected Keith Ellison to Congress. Last I checked he was not only black, he was an actual Muslim, too. Of course, Minneapolis is not Northeastern.

I agree it would be nice to see some "out of the closet" atheists and agnostics elected to public positions as well. Your turn, Northeast!
.

Gravatar Yeah, I wasn't forgetting Keith Ellis but Minneapolis is only the heartland when its represented by Mary Tyler Moore, surely?
