Wow, Deborah, I thought my wife and I were alone liking In Bruges as much as we did. We saw it at a screening and were blown away and then were shocked at the rather tepid reviews that followed.
I just loved this movie.
The film fans on the IMDb seem to love it, but it was poorly promoted. The previews really had nothing to do with the movie I saw.
I also liked it very much, and was surprised to see Colin Farrell winning the GG in the comedy category. I mean, I laughed a number of times during the movie, but it was not what I would consider a pure comedy, not even a black one. It was much more than that, and that's perhaps why I enjoyed it so much.
Lovely commentary on a beautiful film. I was amazed by the depth of feeling--and yes, in agreement with you all about its humor and ambiguity.
