Saddened to hear of the passing of your father. Judging the father through his son, he must have been a wonderful man.
Thanks, everyone. In this case, there's sadness but no sudden, crippling sense of loss for me because my father was lost to us a little bit at a time, over a period of years, and we sort of grieved for him the same way -- a little at a time, as he became less and less the father we knew. His passing brings relief at the end of his suffering, and allows us to once again remember him with appreciation, which had become hard for everyone towards the end.
Tom and I are fortunate to be part of such a gracious online community as this, and I appreciate your kind words very much.

I wanted to post a poem for Steve and Tom in honor of their father and mother. While looking through my favorite collection of poems I couldn't find one that satisfied me, except this one which is actually from "Three Poems for a Twenty-Fifth Anniversary." One of the most painful and beautiful things to come out of any loss like this is the realization that our loved parents, grandparents, and (I hope) spouses live on in us. This poem captures that, for me.
I. Housecleaning
after returning
all the tools I borrowed
