Gravatar But aimai, it's entirely coincidental that the ones who don't have that "commitment to hard-won American values" just happen to be African-American or Latino or from some other country or religion. It's not bigotry against all those people--it's just that they all happen to belong to the subset of Inferior-Americans.

Gravatar Whatever you do, don't let K-Lo in on the fact that our first president, George Washington, was (and for that matter every one of our founding fathers were) British. It will break her widdle heart.

Unless full-blooded means those of white European descent, in which case, (whew!) they're still part of her in-group.

.

Gravatar If Parker would just break down and call Obama a n****r, I'm sure she'd feel a whole lot better.

Idiot.

Gravatar To be fair, I'm sure KP raised the same issues when Schwarzenegger was running.

Cough.

Gravatar I'm full-blooded enough to want a president who was at least born on American soil, not some tropical pesthole like Panama.

Sure, McCain is a citizen, but you have to be born here to really understand it like Obama and Clinton.

Gravatar I've always been somewhat suspicious of Godwin's Law - for example, Imagine the following scenario:

"They are acting like Nazis!"

"Ah! Godwin's Law! You lose!"

"B-but...they are herding Jews onto trains, and burning Synag--"

"What? You're still here?? You already lost by comparing them to Nazis!"

In other words, sometimes comparisons to Nazis are apt and necessary. Otherwise, what does "Never Forget" really mean?

Gravatar Well, my ancestry on both sides goes back to colonial days, and I think she's full of shit.

I wonder, does Michelle (Anchor Baby) Malkin "get it"?

Gravatar Matt Talbot: see here.

Gravatar A shoot, a miss.

No, KP, its not necessarily racist or nativist, but it probably is. For example, it is racist to assert that other races weren't present here before the revolution, and after, from the beginning—that the hispanics in the Southwest who've been here for 400 years are newcomers, or that white southerners who fought against the union share the values that the founders made great.

She didn't say anything close to that. Nice straw-wingnut.

(Someone should tell TPC this is KP, different from K-Lo, otherwise it will seem like you folks are just phoning it in. And n* is such a loaded word, it beggars belief that such cool folk as you would put it in someone's mouth when they haven't said it themselves.)

Regarding Godwin, you've found the fallacy of the excluded middle. In is not necessarily racist to consider issues of immigration on our nation in terms of economy, or shared values, or along many other dimensions. For instance good liberal economists wonder if illegal immigration forces wages down. McSame claims that no citizen will pick lettuce, and others think that well, maybe if a free market existed with no illegal immigration, employers would pay enough. And other people do wonder, reasonably, if large flows of people with an antipathy to Christianity and Judaism is wise. And there are many arguments pro and con about this, but it is not racist to ask this. You may end up with the riots in France when it becomes verboten to ask questions out of fear of being called a racist.

So no, it is not necessarily racist to ask the question KP asks, and it is not probably racist for her to do so, regardless of how much your smear of her depends on that.

Hopefully Atrios will come back soon.

A shoot, a miss.

Gravatar I've had an upsurge in racist, winger email today. The "natives" are growing restless.

Gravatar You know, I live 4 miles from the District and I have to work moderately hard to avoid The Washington Post and its odious columnists. This is more difficult than it ought to be, but you can't be too careful. I turn here for some pretty pictures, a little snark and some insight. What do I get today? Comments on Broder, Gerson and Townhall? You guys are going to get fleas, or worse.

Too late. I now see you got worse.

Gravatar I hope you're not giving away any spoilers from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Some of us haven't read it yet.

Gravatar To be fair, KP and friends are also very upset by American couples who adopt small children from other continents.

Gravatar Regarding Godwin, you've found the fallacy of the excluded middle. In is not necessarily racist to consider issues of immigration on our nation in terms of economy, or shared values, or along many other dimensions.

Shorter dipshit: It's not racist to claim that this nigger standing up there aint really an American because he don't look nuttin like grandma nor grandpar. So I can question him all I want, he don't look like me, act like me nor speak like me, therefore he's not sufficiently American, although I coulda told you that by the color of his skin and the fact that he's a goddamned secret Mooslem here to steal the country from the folks who stole it from its original owners.

What shared values has Parker touched upon here? That African-Americans shipped over here in chains are not sufficiently American? Or that some uppity black man from Africa came along in the 1960's and had the temerity to have sex with a white woman that gave birth to this obamination now before us?

When you can explain just what the fuck a "full-blooded American" is, then maybe I'll pay attention, otherwise, have a coke and a smile and shut the fuck up.

Gravatar "For example, it is racist to assert that other races weren't present here before the revolution, and after, from the beginning—that the hispanics in the Southwest who've been here for 400 years are newcomers, or that WHITE SOUTHERNERS WHO FOUGHT AGAINST THE UNION SHARE THE VALUES THAT THE FOUNDERS MADE GREAT."

Heh, indeedy.

Gravatar "B-but...they are herding Jews onto trains, and burning Synag--"

Or torturing people, imprisoning them without charges or trial, and starting "preemptive" wars.

Gravatar Margaret Dumont meets Julius Streicher. Sweet.

Gravatar Hmm, I wonder what "working class white people" will have to say about this one. I am betting Taylor Marsh melts, sorta the way that Nazi's head was melted when Indy let them open the Ark.

Edwards to endorse Obama

Exactly, Tom

Gravatar From the party that wanted to ammend the constitution for Arnold.

Gravatar What they know is that their forefathers fought and died for an America that has worked pretty well for white Anglo-Saxon Protestants for more than 200 years.

There. Fixed that for her.

Oh, and in the names of all of my dago and mick ancestors, she can kiss my ass with her "Oh, America has always worked for everyone!" bullshit.

Gravatar In other words, sometimes comparisons to Nazis are apt and necessary. Otherwise, what does "Never Forget" really mean?
Matt Talbot

But it's soooo hard to never forget - you need to keep working on it, and working on it, always making a conscious effort to prevent the lessons of the past from slipping away.

I mean, one lapse in focus and all of a sudden, your right arm starts jerking up to the ceiling uncontrollably and armbands start to look real stylish...

Gravatar "B-but...they are herding Jews onto trains, and burning Synag--"

Or torturing people, imprisoning them without charges or trial, and starting "preemptive" wars.

Exactly. But if you compare such actions to a certain regime in central Eurpope from the mid twentieth century, it's "Godwin's Law!!11!!!"

Gravatar Waiting to cut out the deadwood.
Waiting to clean up the city.
Waiting to follow the worms.
Waiting to put on a black shirt.
Waiting to weed out the weaklings.
Waiting to smash in their windows
And kick in their doors.
Waiting for the final solution
To strengthen the strain.
Waiting to follow the worms.
Waiting to turn on the showers
And fire the ovens.
Waiting for the queens and the coons
and the reds and the jews.
Waiting to follow the worms.

Would you like to see Britannia
Rule again, my friend?
All you have to do is follow the worms.
Would you like to send our colored cousins
Home again, my friend?

All you need to do is follow the worms

Gravatar Holy cow, that column was stunningly offensive. Parker is claiming that a Navy brat and an Illinois Goldwater girl have an "instinctual" understanding of American values that an American-born child of immigrants doesn't? Obama's the one who talked about "the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too."

What the hell would Hillary or McCain know about that?

Gravatar Ya, and of course Obama's white side goes back a long way in this country. That's what makes the accusation that its "Not about gender or race" so bizarre. George Allen's mom is french, but he's not accused of being "not american." So embedded in all this guff about "dna" and "blood equity" and johnny come latelies is the gendered notion that its obama's father's citizenship that matters, not his mother's. Obama's father's history that matters, not his mother's.

aimai

Gravatar But aimai, surely you know it is not Obama's father's gender which makes his history important to these bigots.

Gravatar I guess you missed the part in history class where Washingtong & Jefferson were southern white slaveowners, huh?

Seriously, this is the kind of damaging ahistorical ideological jingoistic stupidity I expect from conservatives. (And it just validates their narrative that liberals don't know anything or care about history, too.)

Gravatar Seriously, this is the kind of damaging ahistorical ideological jingoistic stupidity I expect from conservatives.

d'Fuh? Who are you talking to, and what are you talking about?

Gravatar Study shows immigrants assimilating faster than in past.

Gravatar And other people do wonder, reasonably, if large flows of people with an antipathy to Christianity and Judaism is wise.

Wait, what? So now it's religious affiliation that marks someone's affinity for American culture and values. I'm sure you mean the dreaded mooslem furriners, but this native-born atheist invites you to kindly screw yourself.

Gravatar Thers linked to a better essay at bouphonia on the Kathleen Parker piece. And are we having "large flows of muslims" in this country? If we are, it will be like every other "large flow" of refugees, because we fucked up another war on someone else's soil. You think the vietnamese restaurants here are the result of positive immigration policies? When we actually let enough Iraqi refugees in here to make a difference in the quality of Iraqi restaurants, let alone in our political system, I'll start noticing something new. Until then? get out of here with your insane theocratic ass.
