That is why they say never to wear an ipod while cycling, or driving. It incapacitates a sense that could save your life. In this case, that is exactly what happened.
I would only wear an ipod while running or cycling far far away from traffic. If I come near roads, I take it off for this exact reason.

Not only while operating vehicles. I walk to work and often have my headphones on. On one occasion, I stepped off the curb just before the walk light came on and caught--out of the corner of my eye--a bus screaming my way riding the near curb. I jumped back a half-second in time.
Scared the daylights out of me. I still wear the iPod once in a while, but the music is turned down, and I always, always look twice before I step off the curb.
It's too easy to get lost on one's mind while the real world does its own thing.
