It's also worth noting, again, that when some elementary level of decency, humanity and self-respect is given its due, we must remember some of the people we're holding captive are guilty of nothing but having been unlucky.

Thanks, SW and Mike. I am so angry today after hearing our President on the radio, that I probably should avoid posting so that I don't start sounding like the hateful right-wing bloggers.
If an American President cannot call torture torture, we are in dire straits.
The line of mine that you quote, SW, is not original with me. I've have heard it in the last few days. I think it was one of the Republicans (Graham or McCain?) who used it. Whoever used it expressed my opinion well.
