After the game changed so drastically about 30 years ago, Democrats repeatedly set themselves up for drubbings by appearing to carry on as though they were still the dominant party, and as though whatever setback they were experiencing was only a brief aberration.

Dismantling 30 years of bad policies and the ill effects of anything-to-win politics will require a long view, dogged determination and the kind of measured, systematic approach you indicate.

However, if Democrats at long last win the White House and both houses of Congress, I don't look for Republicans to get on board a bipartisan love train. I fully expect them to carry on for some time as if they are really the dominant party, righteous holders of the public's support and trust, and just experiencing a temporary setback.
