My laptop died a few months ago. It was a problem with the wiring - it wouldn't stay on. My friend had to take the hard drive out of my mac and create an external drive.
Good luck!

My "backup" drive just bricked about a week ago.. its the drive that I had all of my photos and knitting patterns on. I've never been able to back it up because my dvd burner doesn't work properly.. so I basically lost 3 years worth of digital photos.
You've got my sympathy.

I feel for you. Our laptop hard drive crashed, after warranty, of course. Part of where I work is also a computer shop, so I can get it fixed reasonably. However, he can't get the thing to start at all, and all of my pictures from our almost-the-whole-way-across-Canada-trip in summer 2007 are on that hard drive. I have some on my Facebook and my blog, but those are only a few. (All I hear from my Travis is, "I told you dozens of times to get a dvd and burn them off before something happened to it.") Cudos for getting a free drive.
