I've been seeing so many examples of rudeness on Ravelry that I've started doing google searches to see how many people are blogging about it. That's how I found your blog.
*sigh* It makes me sad that there are so many people working so hard to build up a community and a few douchebags out there that seem to be trying to tear it down. I've decided to just avoid all of the forums except for the local, New England-based ones, and the knittyheads forum.
Thanks for posting about this. I'm glad I'm not the only person distressed by it.

I wish it was okay to give people compliments in person. I think because people have such a hard time accepting them, people have stopped offering them.
You keep going with this topic until you get it out of your system. No sense letting it fester.

I think that if someone wants to make a criticism, that is valid, they can do it in a nice way. So many people yuse the "honesty" card to be rude or mean. kinda like the people that say something and then when you get offended say,"I was joking". Well, it wasn't funny, pal.
basically, it's all about the presentation. For example, "that yarn looks awful". versus,"Hmm, I think maybe that yarn needs a simpler pattern to show it's colours".

Well, if you kept reading that thread at all, you'll see I agreed with you, though, well, I called out the rudeness. It's amazing how many assholes didn't agree.

Oh, I think I really would have enjoyed that seminar on negative language and the power of avoiding it! I'll remember your second example: it will certainly be very useful to me...
The point brought up in number 4 was very interesting. Thanks for sharing that bit of food for thought!

Whoa. I never thought about it before, but the "Easier to compliment people on the internets" thing is totally true for me too. It's also easier for me to accept compliments on the internet. If someone compliments me in real life I tend to roll my eyes and be all "yeah, right!" all self-deprecating. But when people compliment me online, I am much more likely to just be "Thanks!!" about it. So, another reason to be nice to people online!
