Without realizing it, you answered your own question.
"Women don't have this problem! We go to the bathroom, flush it, and voila! No smell!"
Not all men flush (it's a waste of water, anyway. Thank goodness we've moved away from the perpetually-flushing trough). I'm sure you know what stale old urine smells like.
Urinal cakes aren't without their drawbacks, though. The pinks ones are usually okay, but there are some blue ones that tend to swell up when they get wet (which, of course, they will). As if splash-back wasn't enough of a problem, just imagine wearing khakis and having a blue chemical splash back at your pants.
Anyway...

In Bret Easton Ellis's novel American Psycho, the protagonist coats a used urinal cake in chocolate and gives it as a present to his unsuspecting girlfriend, who eats a bite out of it. - from that Wikipedia link.
I totally forgot about that scene and how grossed out I was by that. Thanks for the reminder. Ha!

Haha, Thomas. Yeah, that would sorta suck to have blue chemical stuff splashed all over yourself. It just seems so weird to have a urinal cake. Sure, I guess it deodorizes. But come on - there are tons of toilets out there that are water efficient. I am sure they can make urinals the same way. Why should they instead stick nasty deodorizer plugs in the bottom of the urinal? And can you IMAGINE the poor schlep that has to change those out? Ew.
Haha, CE. I saw that on the Wiki entry, too. I almost gagged when I read that.

I love Patricks explanation. Quick thinking and funny. I'll even forgive you for never having watched The Office before, since I know you will now watch it forevermore. It has that effect on people..funny stuff.

Actually, most of them don't get changed, they just dissolve away and a new one gets tossed in. Some of them are in little plastic cages, so that would need to be taken out and replaced, but that's what rubber gloves are for.

I didn't know what they were either! One day my boyfriend came out of the bathroom saying how weird it was to always pee on a Don brand urinal cake (Don is his boss' name).
Pee on a what?
Glad I'm not the only one, I sure was singled out that night.
