I'd like to think that Oct 5 will be a success, but the wage slaves are too frightened that they might lose their meager positions to really walk off for long. Perhaps all of us need to be heroes. Tapping away here isn't stopping anything, and only lends to the unholy feeling of helplessness that I am sure most of us are experiencing. Yes, our constant internet dissent has finally begun to turn the tide of American opinion, but, as I said, fascists don't give a damn about what the people think. This means that open rebellion is the only way we can stop them, which is not going to happen. What I found in conflict with the article's interpretation was that the powers only apply to aliens to the US, ie., non-citizens. So, Americans cannot (yet) be taken by the government. Don't get me wrong - this is very disturbing stuff if you are not an American citizen.
A part of the bill that I found really disturbing and I had to see for myself, was that the bill states that those apprehended/detained cannot invoke protection from the Geneva Convention. Incredible!
The US Bill of Rights, 6th Amendment, according to how I read it, secures rights of the "accused" to a speedy and public trial... I don't see that the "accused" has to be an American citizen, so I think the 6th Amendment should protect aliens and so should protect "enemy combatants." If this is a valid interpretation, then the Military Commissions Act of 2006 is unconstitutional.
I'm not a lawyer, so I admit that I may be missing something here.

I think Whitney may be too worked up over this bill. It is not for domestic crimes or 'terror' acts. It is not really the end of habeas corpus or Geneva Convention either, so much as it is a 'patch' on the military code of justice and the Geneva Conventions to cover freelance bombers and such who not affiliated with a legal enemy. And the definitions defining 'legal enemy' sound reasonable, at least to me.
In any case, in a war zone, you've always had military courts or tribunals carrying out rules on all soldiers and POWs alike. Nothing really new here. Again, this law appears to be adding a patch for the gray-area partisan combatants who are not members of regonized milia or formal enemy units.

The fifth step would authorize the Executive Office to organize each and every position of work in the nation. A person can apply for the oppoetunity to serve as a volunteer in any position, during a four year term. Each position would be performed by the best qualified volunteer. Each volunteer would have earned the lifetime "Privilege to Work" by serving the nation as a volunteer in some task.
In step six, the WExecutive would adopt the plan for a trial period of four years. At the end of the fourth year, the people would vote to either continue the plan for another four years or abandon the plan and return society to capitalism, based on money,
If the plan was approved for another four year period, a vote of approval would be necessa4y for the plan to continue.

Yes, I see what you are saying...but when I look at America right now, it is practically a police state already. There are many, many agencies with the power to arrest and detain people. While I'm not a gun nut, I do think that the only reason why it is not now an overt police state is the fact that there are so many guns in the possession of average citizens. The right wing will never give up their guns, nor do I think they would stand by the military if the military turned it's guns on the people.
Let us not also forget that urban gangs are well armed and not afraid. Yes, they are not well respected in their own neighborhoods, and they are certainly feared, but the locals may well fear the feds more than the gangs. They would be among the first targets when and if the military begins to seek out homegrown insurgents.
During the Nineties, the terrorists in this country were seen as the right-wing nuts like Koresh and and Montana Freemen. OKC was done by such people, supposedly, but we did not break down the constitution to go after them, because even on the small scale it appears to be violent revolution. Imagine those incidents on a large scale. This is not something any sane person wants.
As long as the powers that be can keep the resistance looking like a small, isolated rebellion, they will go after them with force. When an entire city or state goes into rebellion, the military will balk at attempting any oppression.

This is truly shocking, but on the other hand, I've seen coming since the 'conservative revolution' of the 1970s that manoeuvred Reagan into power.
That the American right would end up annulling virtually every thing that makes a society civilized was obvious from the first in their relentless, bloody-minded attacks on the welfare state and the counterculture and their callous policies in favour of the death penalty and the mass incarceration of Americans for trivial, mostly drug-related offences.
The time to oppose the right was in the late 70s and early 80s. Remember when it was 'cool to be conservative'? Yeah, well that was the time when the ground was laid for an administration like the Bush administration.
I honestly feel it's much too late to stop the rightwing juggernaut in America. No matter how unpopular the rightwing is, or how unpopular it gets, there is no effective opposition, either from the media, the Democrats or the judiciary.
Anyone who still believes in the values that the right have overthrown in the US, should simply leave the country because things aren't ever going to get better there. Move to South America, and help the 'Bolivarian' revolution there. Its in those countries that civilized values still have a chance.
I wonder how close we are to the END.
I know of an elder man who is an Holocaust survivor, and my friend who is his neighbor recently noticed that he was moving, emptying his house (in U.S.) so she asked him, are you moving, why you didn't mentioned last time I saw you? Vahab's sentiments are precisely mine. I have expressed like thoughts for many years re U.S.of A. marines landing on the shores of my country -New Zealand. I'm a 66yr old woman, been a registered nurse, educator & pacifist-oriented. However, back in the 70s, I realised that the "land of the free; home of the brave" was a huge lie. IMO, the "insurgents" everywhere are simply doing what members of the French, Norwegian, Greek & other national resistance movements did during WW2.

I just read George Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia." In it, he observes that, under the Spanish government in the 1930s, people had no habeas corpus protections and that those arrested by the govt. often languished in jail without hearings or trials for months or years. Orwell notes that this, of course, could not happen in an English system of justice.
