Trevor,
As a movie enthusiast, I have heard that argument like this before.
The movie going public has to shell out $8 a ticket, so they are truly a reflection of the marketplace in action.
Bad movies are bad movies.
Cursing, nudity and bizarre behavior has worn thin.
Audiences are always looking for good story telling, and movies that entertain. This is the challenge that moviemakers face.
Many people are rediscovery movies from the 30's 40's and 50's that fit this bill. Recently, I rented Shirley Temple in Heidi for my 8-year-old nieces. They loved it. Movies like Mrs. Miniver 1942, Goodbye Mr. Chips 1939 and the 1948 Oliver Twist are worthy of reexamination.
As to the comments of Ms. Stone and the producers of her latest film, maybe they should listen to one of their own.
"We are not trying to entertain the critics. I'll take my chances with the public"
Walt Disney
