In my days of being a sales and service person, I always do my best to help and serve others by providing them information, thus empowering them to make a decision whether or not if it means buy from me. When I find out they need something else, I direct them elsewhere. Part of great service is also operating by truth and doing the right thing.
I've been reading this blog for a while and I must say I'm very impressed.
Be awesome!

Ben,
Thanks for the thoughts and feedback.
I think that most folks that work in sales at the core are just like you. Trying to serve others to meet their needs by being honest about what they are selling and helping them to go where ever they need to be to meet that need. My guess is that when you do that you feel just as succesful (if not more so)as if you made the sale.
Maybe the struggle I have is that sometimes the pressure for profit pushes that core focus to the side, resulting in both parties losing out on an oppurtunity for a good service interaction.

Tom,
What I believe is that profit only comes when the service or sale person has served the customer rightly so, without bias. Now being a consultant in my own business as well as a business owner, I find this more apparent than ever. People are attracted to those who do the right thing and will pay reasonably for it.
