Joe, I seriously am trying to get to grips with Hegel's theory of the nation. I am convinced that the only logical way to deal with the zionist golem is to show that 'Israel' is not a nation in the proper sense of the word and hence should not have a state.
However, the correct mix of subjective and objective factors for determining what is 'a proper nation' is the problem. A religious believer will say that his or her religion states that 'Israel' is or is not 'a proper nation' and that, being purely subjective, is a take it or leave it opinion. A marxist will say that there is no such thing as 'a proper nation', marxism after all is a value nihilism. So the answer lies in between, where Hegel was before the modern 'Left' and 'Right' tore his work into two pieces and started arguing about which piece was 'the real Hegel'.

I've found they can present themselves as moralistic when it suites their purpose. I don't dispute the point however.
What I mean is that marxists hold that there are no pre-existing values : the only values are created by labour. I realised when I wrote that post that the question I was asking didn't seem to fit into our usual smooth discursive style : in what way does the question of what constitutes 'a nation' involve "a pre-existing order of Right and Wrong"? Does this latter expression imply the presence of a God in history?
Well, that's where Hegel gets interesting. He says that there is indeed evidence of a God present in history, but that this God is also the Spirit of Man, which is in pursuit of liberty.
By liberty he does not mean license, as is shown by his condemnation of the French Revolution, which he argues had no worthy object of pursuit and therefore necessarily degenerated into tyranny and terror.
These views would be commonplace coming from a conventional Christian, but he isn't a conventional Christian. The idea that God is the same thing as the Spirit of Man is definitely not conventional Christianity (even Lutheran Christianity) but nor is it merely simple humanism either. It is exactly in between the two.
This makes it usable to me in my effort to explain what is wrong with zionism.
