Is it something to stop people climbing up a pole on the district line?

If you need to borrow a small child, I have a spare.

Thanks Ian - I'll bear that in mind, as you do seem to have been busy bringing more little Ians or Ianettas into the world.

I hadn't thought about the mystery object as an anti pole dancing device, but that would work.

Hey Annie, or you could organise a Going Underground's meeting and get group entry tickets!

I'm thinking about going to the museum since 2 years ago

There are currently 3 mystery items, the green thing with spikes is clearly intended to keep animals from from climbing a pole or walking along a horizontal pipe. The other two items are a slice of flat-bottom rail with an oddly shaped top (possibly conductor rail rather than running rail), and a some wax impregnated paper torches for emergency lighting.

Will think about going there Friday afternoon, I'll write something up about it if I have time on my hands. Thanks for the reminder.

The rail is obiously tram rail (I'd say trolley rail, but that'd be confusing!) The odd flange heights are guards to keep a tram from jumping the tracks and ending up in the road. The 106 1/4 pound per yard gave it away as that is very close to modern "light" rail (115 lbs per yd).

Off topic, I just bought "The Tube, Series 1-2" at the LTM Shop on my London holiday two weeks ago. I love this series! How was it received in England? I know there was a third series a year ago but can't find it on sale. Back to the show, I love the Underground even more, especially after watching the beleagured station masters (e.g., at London Bridge) deal with problems, drunks, touts and rude customers.

I agree with the pole climbing pain maker

As to a Going Underground day out, I would love to drop in

Let us know if this might happen?

Take Care

Fantastic news, I've been waiting for the musuem to reopen ever since I moved to London

(I reckon the green spiky thing is an anti-climb device too.)

Thanks for the tip, Annie

Went there this morning and had a blast:

Photos and video are up.

Regardless of going to the museum, although that would be great - how would people feel about actually meeting up somewhere - presumably in London, with Annie as the star guest. Cocktails from the LT Museum would probably taste better in a group

Good/bad idea?
Michael

Yep, good idea! Just don't tell the stalkers.

Great photos, Mike!

Wishiwuzthere.

A tube freak meet-up? I'm not sure we're decent enough people for that (speaking for and of myself of course). We're only one step above trainspotters.

There are regular tube challenges with meetups and boozeups. And it is sometimes possible to catch a fleeting glimpse of La Mole.

I['d also like to echo the sentiment of "great photos Mike" - they're better than most of the official ones.

Thanks guys! I find the trick is to take about 9,000 digital photos and hope one or two come out ok

It's on my list for my next trip over. Thanks for the info.

I enjoyed the visit. It's not entirely devoted to the tube, but still has enough to leave you satisfied. It looks really nice too.

Hi Annie,

I don't know if you managed to fight your way through the kids to play the game on the Tube Lines exhibit? I should declare an interest as I work for Tube Lines, which is one of the main sponsors of the new museum. In our game you get to drive a Tube train and race against a computer-driven train of the future, such as will be common on the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines once they've been upgraded in 2009, 2011 & 2014 respectively. It's available online as well as at the museum at www.tubelines.com/museum.

Have fun!

Regards,
Laura

Hi there

Good to know you're all enjoying the place. I work at a company called ISO, we made the interactives and audio visual for the museum.

Anyways, just a quick note / correction - London IS one of the five cities in World City Walks. New York, Tokyo, Paris, Shanghai, Delhi and good old London. Featuring some surprisingly happy looking folk.

Cheers

Suzy

I think I'd seen that green spiky thing on someone coming out of one of the clubs near Vauxhall a few years back!

Share you thoughts on our flickr site and all will be revealed!

Greg O.,

I know I loved it. Still hoping that there may be a fourth. Surprised that S3 isn't available though, particularly as it contained that two-parter on the bombings.

I'm going on a trip to London next Spring. I may even vbe living there for a few years if everything goes well. I've always wondered how the underground train system worked, and if I could use it to get around. At least I know that I can..

Cheers!
