I'd like to know what the causes and effects are, but I'm sure of one thing: the Kyoto Protocol won't help any of it and it's not influenced much (if at all) by human activity.

I disagree-- I think human activity has a lot of influence. The oceans have absorbed much of the warming thus far, but now the atmosphere will accelerate its temperature increases. This year may be the warmest ever recorded.
