Gravatar Aww what a cute little white coat seal. You are aware that white coat harp seals have not been legally hunted since 1987? Well looking at any anti-seal hunt poster you won’t realize it. Most of the images you see are either old or altered in order to demonize the seal hunt. Seals cannot be hunted until they are independent of their mothers. Young seals are taken but there are a large number of older adult seals hunted each season. Seals are not used for fur then left to rot most of the seal is used after it is killed. The oil and meat is rich in omega 3 and 6 and is used for human and animal consumption.

I’m curious as to where you read that the quota is unsustainable. Each year the quota changes after the population is evaluated. Currently off the coast of Newfoundland there are over 5 million Harp seals. The population even with the annual seal hunt is thriving.

Most of the seals today are shot rather then clubbed. How do you think animals in slaughterhouses die? One of the methods used to kill cattle involve hitting it on the head. Why is that more acceptable then methods used hunting seals?

The world wildlife fund and the Canadian Humane society don’t seem too concerned about harp seals. I think it has to do with the fact they realize that the harp seals are in no danger of extinction, and once killed the seals are being used for purposes other then fur.

Alaska has a seal hunt so why doesn’t the United States humane society try to deal with their own seal hunt before criticizing Canada on theirs?
