FDR was also accused of many of the same things pre-Pearl Harbor. Wilkes almost won the 1940 election on one premise - FDR was aiming to take us to war, a war we shouldn't be bothering with.

And the isolationist Right was incorrect then, just as the isolationist Right and Left are incorrect now.
BTW: great book on the topic you raised is Dr. Seuss Goes to War -- a compilation of Theodore Geisel's political cartoons in the late '30s into the early '40s.
