He banned Emma over a fairly mild remark, but didn't ban Bobb Cobb for calling Emma a very vulgar name. If that wasn't a personal jab, I don't know what is. At least they removed that comment, though.

And by God I’m going to honor the ban

As she posts a comment.

Classy ToS violation, Bobb Cobb. Real classy.

"I find it highly eronic that a source like the Olympian bans someone for excorsizing their 1st amendment rights."

Your are so correct -- the whole thing is extraordinarily ironic.

But it was the O that did the exorsizing. The thought police at the so-called newspaper exorcised Emma after she/he exercised her/his Constitutionally-guaranteed right to freedom of speech.

So, in case any of you were thinking that Olympia is still located within the borders of a Democratic form of government, obviously you have another think coming.

Bye Emma. You'll be missed.

We've been talkin' 'bout 'cha all day.

She who wont be named:
I think I love you

Quick, copy and save "e's" post before it, too, disappears!

Emma, if you're reading this, thanks for all the breaths of fresh air you've provided around here.

Here is the story.

Emma got banned today for taking “jabs” at a fellow commenter.  The way I understand it, someone named bill posted a comment that characterized the citizens of downtown Olympia as “drunks,” “bums,” and “skanks” (that post has since been deleted).  Emma responded with something like “Oh bill, you really shouldn’t talk about your mother that way.”  She was banned shortly thereafter.  Those are the unvarnished facts.

If I were Emma, I would make no apologies or condemnations.  I would thank everyone for the outpouring of support and for the swell times we’ve shared in these comment threads.  I would say that I am sorry to have witnessed the atmosphere of the comments sections grow increasingly rancorous and even cruel at times.  But I would also say I am happy that some of us, even ideological opposites, have managed to treat each other with something akin to dignity.  I would say I am proud of how I represented myself and the progressive cause.  I would also proudly admit that I never once called for someone to be banned because they disagreed with me or treated me disrespectfully.  Other places on The Intertubes, would call this a GBCW post, for “goodbye cruel world.”  But I’m not leaving, I was banned.  And by God I’m going to honor the ban…unlike our friend Kevin Storeman who thinks he doesn’t share this earth and its rules with anyone else (what, you expect me to stop now?).  With that, I say goodbye.  And friends, if you ever get banned, remember that bold posters never die, they just change their IP address.

PS. Oh man, that line…“perhaps you need to find slower sheep” …that really was pretty damn funny.

Cool, trash the cops for an accident. And then to bring up an injured bicyclist from several years ago. How many emergency runs have they made with so few accidents. I can think of numerous serious accidents involving civilians and their crappy driving habits. Per Capita, the cops have fewer accidents than the general public, and they are responding to protect you whiners.

To the guy that had them take 25 minutes to respond to his alarm....consider yourself lucky. TCSO doesn't even go to them anymore. Maybe it took them so long cause they didn't need the adrenaline rush that day.

I find it highly eronic that a source like the Olympian bans someone for excorsizing their 1st amendment rights.

Isnt the whole idea of the media to excorsize THEIR 1st amendment rights?

Would the last one to leave, please turn out the lights?

As long as the officers are OK, this is truly all that matters... and maybe a little re-training on emergency response and intersection clearing... Someones gotta smile..

Don't go, Lefties. I only lean to the right on taxes and the military and the indiscriminate use of abortion as a means of birth control and the right of a store owner to sell the products he desires and.....

Well, I still don't want you all to go.

Have a good weekend.

The Olympian should probably elaborate on what CAUSED the collosion. Was it the OPD officers' fault or was it something else? That's the simple missing component of this news report.

On a side-topic, does anyone know why the people on the 4th Ave Bridge have been protesting the OPD the past week or so? All I see are signs that are pretty generic. Just curious.

And I do just get tired of the typical comments about the police. I certainly am not happy about some of my traffic encounters with them, but overall I know some of the officers and they are great people (Officer "Hutch", Steve Hurd, etc.). Now my experience with the Lacey PD is not good-- they are much bigger "harda**es." It varies department to department, I'm sure.

But bottom line is when they overstep their boundaries then sure-- protest, be rightfully angry. Contact the Olympian, and be disgusted. But at the same time these are the people who enforce law, which many times people break but think it was "okay to" so then they act with disgust that they were arrested for destroying property or some other obviously-illegal act. I'm tired of preconceived hatred of people, like "you DO need to hate the cops as a citizen, it's an obligation!"

ep,

No way.... I'm as far right as you can get! I love the banter that goes back and forth! I'd be lost without you guys on the left! Besides... do any of us really take all these postings seriously?

Even though our politics are opposite, doesn't mean I wouldn't sit across the table from you drinkin' a brew and laughing about all this!

Lefties Don't Go!!

So a couple of cop cars collided. Accidents happen even to cops.

As for the banning, while i rarely agreed with most of her positions, I can think of no one who used more care to show respect to other posters, and refrain from personal attacks. She must have pissed in someones wheaties this morning.

I dont much care for tattle-tale mentality either. It seems so NAZI like.

ah free speech...gotta love..

..oh wait.

We lefties are conspiring on olyblog to leave this board. Mr. Mason has his eye on this as he is a member there too.
How do the righties feel about that? Would you start to eat your own or insult us from afar? Would you be glad to see us go?

That's very interesting, ep and Mo5.

Somehow I don't believe that an offended reader clicked "report" on all of those comments.

My comment disappeared too. I will be surprised if this even posts.

i got disappeared too.

Wow, comments from CCM, NIMBY and greyhorse are all disappearing! Were they considered offensive because they questioned the fairness of the Olympian's comment enforcement? I wonder who was offended?

Well, now it looks like I'm just talking to myself, hahahah--

waitasec

does this mean I'm next?

Everyone, the cops were responding to an incident reported, and a collision happened. So What???

AT LEAST they were responding, or trying to. How about if there were always incidences happening, and NO COP to respond. Wow, what a world to live in!! Yep, can't wait for that scenario, NOT!

Anonymous - I've reported comments that were defamatory or abusive and gotten no response, and I've heard exactly the same story from others, so it's hard for me to believe the "report" button does anything except when the editors feel like it.

But OK, Let's play ball. I've got some time on my hands, and I'm sure I'll have no trouble finding offensive, abusive, defamatory comments that detract from the wonderful "culture of mutual respect" the Olympian claims to encourage.

People get banned when someone complains. If no-one complains, they don't get banned. If you find something offensive then "Click here to reort this comment to the Olympian." It's under every post.

Somehow I doubt the editors are going to answer the questions about inconsistent enforcement raised by Yikes, Blue, CCM Fan, greyhorse and myself (and the many other criticisms I'm sure they're reading on the site Yoda linked). They'll just keep hiding behind their selectively-used ban button.

Anonymous Bob:

"The level of service is outstanding.."

Really? When I security alarm went off at my house it took them at least 20 to 25 minutes to respond. I got there before they did and I was on a bicycle and at least 15 minutes away!!!! Lucky for me it was a false alarm because of a cat that got too close to the sensor.

Another reason why the police force needs to stop car chases and fast driving...It's an adrenalin rush, the chase is on, it's fun for them or at the very least exciting, action...Thank God that no innocent civilian was killed or hit by the Oly police, they did hit and severely injure a bicyclist on the west side who couldn't get out of the way fast enough, a few years ago. About the ban, yes there are constant insults and nasty stabs taken indirectly or directly by the right wingers who dominate this comment section...I rarely ever write or read the Oly news or comments because of this. Who ever makes the decision to ban, has right wing sympathies or is right wing...Who knows???All I do know is the Oly Comment section is for right wing negative Nellie's and Dudlies. I look at it this way, at least it keeps them and their guns off the street...We are all safe for the time being as long as they rule something, so let them have the OLympian as their very own....

They need active cameras watching the area around the night clubs so they can watch and catch those doing damage. It's been said that the same gangs, group or people cause most of the problems at night spots. The insurance companies and city elders should have enforced more parking and street lights being on and cameras in those areas anyway after the number of assaults in similar clubs.

With cameras, they might have seen what was going on there and where the vehicles went. In fact, cameras on all the street intersections or Lights would have shown you where the vehicle went maybe blocks from the clubs. This knowledge might have saved some patrol cars from damage and patrollers from whiplash and maybe retiring on disability pay.

Police cars colide!!!! Who cares what the disturbance was. Is someone trying to change the subject or what???????? Your tax dollars at work.

Police depend many times on "Emergency Pre-emption" units on their vehicles to give them a green at the intersection. I don't know if the intersection was equiped with pre-emption but the rule is "make sure your direction has the green and don't assume that it will change just because your Opticom is on".

Emma,

http://www.olyblog.net/emma-gets...- today#comments

Love,

Good point, CCM. The banning process definitely seems arbitrary. I know the back-and-forth "banter" between commenters can get pretty heated, but it seems like the editors mostly allow it, until perhaps someone on their hit list for the day steps into the fray. That's my best guess for why what's acceptable and even mild on one day is suddenly bannable.

But why is it still OK to post baseless speculation attacking the credibility and reputation of rape victims or police officers, to cite two very recent examples? There's just no consistency in how the posting standards are interpreted and enforced.

Yeah, that first comment sounds pretty defamatory.

What did Emma say that was supposedly worse than that? Anybody know? I don't always agree with her, but from what I've seen, she doesn't tend to just flame others with personal attacks.

I'm curious if this was a legit banning or just a technicality used as an excuse to get rid of a regular poster.

Are you for real Anony Bob? OPD one of the BEST?!?! They are among the worst I have ever seen. After Seattle PD, OPD is the most neutered, traffic nanny, bunch of meter maids ever to hide behind a badge.
Any credibility you may have had is WAY out the window now, Bobby.

What donut shop? There aren't any in Olympia that I'm aware of. At least none open at 2am.

I think the OPD does a fine job. It's an accident and thankfully neither was injured too badly, other than their ego.

I wonder if people will blame the greeners, the gays, the homeless, or liberals for the accident.

Pull it together folks. Patrol cars get in accidents, much is expected from them and the smart-alek comments you guys are throwing out there just show your level of immaturity. Hey Aaron, how does taking a jab at a commentor compare to slanderous innuendo about the local police?

Emma gets banned for making personal jabs at other commenters???

Ok folks. Im done here. have a good life

I travel around the state and country. OPD is one of the best police depts around. The level of service is outstanding. These things will happen. Just an accident.

Typical!!! I wonder if they even caught anybody.....probably not. The other cops were probably at the donut shop....

What ever happened to the good 'Ol Days when the cops would wait until the disturbance was over and then stop by to help the combatants to St. Pete's.?

Ha Ha

This is priceless. Must be graduates of the Hazzard County Hot Pursuit school.

Downtown Olympia.

Family friendly.

Bring the kids.

Banned. (Personal jabs at other commenters are not acceptable.) - Aaron Mason, Online Production

I wonder if they gave either cop a Field Sobriety Test. Nah, probably not.
