Hey jj,
Could you find any report newer than 2004?

such as this

UPDATE: Wednesday, September 12, 2007 - New historic SH sea ice maximum and NH sea ice minimum

Just when you thought this season's cryosphere couldn't be more strange .... The Southern Hemisphere sea ice area has broken the previous maximum of 16.03 million sq. km and is currently at 16.26 million sq. km. This represents an increase of about 1.4% above the previous SH ice area record high. The observed sea ice record in the Southern Hemisphere (1979-present) is not as long as the Northern Hemisphere. Prior to the satellite era, direct observations of the SH sea ice edge were sporadic.

Also note that 1979 was at the end of the "little ice age" when global cooling was the "widely accepted theory"

Nice map bandmate. Now they won't have to replace Percival landing and the streets will be clean.

"There is widespread acceptance that global warming can happen, that human beings are causing it."

Is it happening yet or not, TJ?

Here's a link for those doubters. It's from The Washington Post. The first paragraph is directed to people like you. Read it at your own risk.

BTW, you guys really need to get out more often.
...

To Randy and Jim,

You guys are a hoot. Ignorance is bliss, eh fellas?

What I can't understand is why not tap into local experts? UW, TESC, c'mon, you mean to tell me we need a journalist from NYC and a citizen writer from Colorado? What do they know about our region and local impact?

I'd suggest the city contact the Climates Impact Group which focuses on the Pacific Northwest and are experts in climate change in the Columbia River basin. While Olympia may not be in the basin, officially, we're pretty damn close.

Jim,
If you question the effect of sea level rise on Olympia, I refer you to the following URL: https://scholarsbank.uoregon.edu/...andle/1794/ 3927

NOtice the URL says "Scolars bank," not "Idoiots bank."

If you need more info, I can bring it, believe me. Try to creep your way out of denial, please.

"This is truly terrifying people, wake up it's your tax dollars being so grossly misused.
Corruption at its finest | 09.13.07 - 12:48 pm"

I'll tell you what is truly terrifying. Someone reported below that 50% of scientists believe that global warming is real and that human caused pollution is exacerbating it? What's terrifying if it is true is that there won't be the political will to do anything about it. There will be just a bunch of "conservative" politics blocking any solution. Do they want to wait until the results are in? How conservative is that? $25,000 is peanuts compared to the price that will be paid if even the slightest fears of human accelerated global warming is real.

So many people only think about money. We can't do anything to prevent a possible catastrophe over the next 10,000 years if it means that there might be an effect on our short term economy while we make some adjustments. It is already being demonstrated that money can be made by farmers growing biofuel crops. And there are a lot of other environmental solutions that make money.

People hoot over this "terrifying" waste of taxpayer money, and I'm terrified about the terrified. I don't have any proof that it's real, but I don't have any proof it is not. What is truly terrifying is people being callous about pollution and the environment. I'll stop worrying about human caused global warming when someone with some credibility proves it is not real.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A new analysis of peer-reviewed literature reveals that more than 500 scientists have published evidence refuting at least one element of current man-made global warming scares.

More than 300 of the scientists found evidence that

1) a natural moderate 1,500-year climate cycle has produced more than a dozen global warmings similar to ours since the last Ice Age and/or that
2) our Modern Warming is linked strongly to variations in the sun's irradiance. "This data and the list of scientists make a mockery of recent claims that a scientific consensus blames humans as the primary cause of global temperature increases since 1850," said Hudson Institute Senior Fellow Dennis Avery.
Other researchers found evidence that
3) sea levels are failing to rise importantly;
4) that our storms and droughts are becoming fewer and milder with this warming as they did during previous global warmings;
5) that human deaths will be reduced with warming because cold kills twice as many people as heat; and
6) that corals, trees, birds, mammals, and butterflies are adapting well to the routine reality of changing climate.

Maybe the city can get a refund!

Marcie...wrote.....
much of our downtown and residences that are on the Sound will be DIRECTLY affected by global warming! DUH!

Wow, where are your facts and data on this, what and how much of Oly will be affected Marcie? You must know something the council does not since they are brining in speakers.

jj, you are now
--------- sHunned --------- again!

No it is more like the resistance the Spaniards got from the Aztecs when they tried to stop them from sacrificing virgins, and slaves to make the weather change.

The Left wants everyone to sacrifice whatever it takes to their environmental gods so the weather will stay the same, they are as ignorant of weather changes as the Aztec were.

In the known history of the Earth, has the weather ever stayed the same jj?

I'm sure this is the same kind of resistance Copernicus found when he discovered that the Earth actually orbits around the Sun. I know this discovery was met with much resistance and, no doubt, ridicule.

jj | 09.13.07 - 6:56 pm

Actually jj, in this scenario it is those who question the global warming theories who are more like Copernicus and you are more like the establishment who was convinced that the earth was the center of the universe. Based on your own statements there is "consensus" within the scientific community. If what you say is true (and it isn't) then you are the establishment and have bought into the hype about the sun revolving around the earth. That is what the establishment thought. It is actually those who dare to question global warming theories who are ridiculed (in your analogy, just like Capernicus). At least get your analogies straight.

This is what causes citizens to pass more laws to restrict what elected officials can spend money on. This is nearing the line of gift of public funds. I might think real hard about passing a new tax after this issue.

Anyone that argues global warming is not a local issue has obviously never left Lacey. Uhh..hello...much of our downtown and residences that are on the Sound will be DIRECTLY affected by global warming! DUH!

Now, whether it's appropriate to pay for these speakers with tax payer money is another matter. I don't know what funds the discrecany fund, maybe it's grants for specific uses. But it's still a bit tough to swallow when there's so many more issues and these speakers could command at least a nominal ticket fee to help offset the costs.

I plan on braving the lines and getting my ticket, though. But then again I tend to take every opportunity to educate myself on the topics, no matter where my allegiance lies.

If I hear another slogan like "needing to address global issues or be part of the global consciousness" I'll scream.

The CITY council should be focused primarily on CITY and LOCAL issues. These are things they have control over. Not cow farting. Not nuclear proliferation. Not American Foreign Policy which is a GLOBAL issue handled at the proper level. They are not going to make a dent in Global Warming. If they do, the dent will be in the wallets of fired up taxpayers who pay for theorists to expose views that may well be wrong. Our CITY council has little connection to the LOCAL consciousness.

$25,000 for two people to talk hot air, while transients will freeze this winter. What is wrong with the council?

Fix potholes, hire police, make housing afforable for the local needy and seniors, support the Fire Departments equipment needs and stop farting around adding to warming.

Oh wow another cause of global warming, I'll have to add this to my list. Let's see, first I need to take my cars to the junkyard and bike everywhere. Next I need to add wind power and solar panels to my house and get off the grid. And now I find out I can no longer eat meat and have to become a vegetarian. If we all do this, problem solved!
But yet we are the ones being ridiculous because we don't buy into the hype, okkkk.

Sarge,

I can see the right wing disinformation machine has brewed up an especially strong batch of kool-aid on this topic.

I wonder if genetic researchers will soon find a "gullibility gene." Maybe that will explain this fascinating phenomena.

Go ahead and believe what you will, folks. I know that there is nothing I can say that will change your mind.

I'm sure this is the same kind of resistance Copernicus found when he discovered that the Earth actually orbits around the Sun. I know this discovery was met with much resistance and, no doubt, ridicule.
...

What a huge waste of tax payer money.
Global warming is a huge lie.
Climate change is going to happen no matter what humans do, it's a natural cycle.
There are 500 new studies out that debunk the lies of global warming, but I bet me telling you about them are the first you are hearing about it.
It's just a way for the radical left wing to try and control our lives and justify there tax increases.
Don't be fooled people, for every so called scientist who say's global warming is happening, there are just as many who say it is not.

scott,...all I can say is, well, do you live in a cave?

What happened to the low bid process? Geez I would have given a lecture on global warming for ten bucks and twelve pack of Oduls Amber Non-Alcoholic Beer. My theory is that global warming is due to all that hot air politicians generate. And the wasteful burning of our taxpayer funds. Aggh!!

The other thing that is funny is that I bet all the people that jj is insulting for not buying the global warming nonsense, are all for conservation, cleaning up litter, clean air, water etc....

But we are not folks who are using this al gore farce to seize money and power over regular people.

jj must have found a way to profit off of the globale warming farce.

Those are the only kind of people who are still beating the dead horse called global warming.

anon,

Think about it. Heartland wants to sew the seeds of doubt. It's a much more effective tactic to claim it's a fifty-fifty debate. It seems reasonable, but it's entirely inaccurate.

You are being conned. Willingly. Hook, line and sinker.
.

Can someone please explain to me why there was 'no money' for Lakefair security (Navy Ships) but all of a sudden, the OCC comes up with a discretionary fund for guest speakers to talk about TJ's favorite pet project? I would consider the Canadian and US Navy guest speakers.

Forgive me for I am not the brightest bulb in the box!

anon,

There you go again! Crichton is a total tool for the right. I used to love his books until his political agenda got in the way.

He is totally biased and he's making a ton of dough of all you gullible rubes!.

Anon3,
Don't be badmouthing 'environmentalism' or people with think your toilet is in your kitchen.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is proposing to increase federal government spending on climate change from $5 billion this year to $6.5 billion next year. Only the largest corporations clear more income after expenses in a given year. $6.5 billion of pure, free-flowing cash for the researchers who can squawk loudest to get their share of. So here's another angle to consider:
"Right now, scientists are in exactly the same position as Renasissance painters, commissioned to make the portrait the patron wants done. And if they are smart, they'll make sure their work subtly flatters the patron. Not overtly. Subtly. This is not a good system for research into those areas of science that affect policy. Even worse, the system works against problem solving. Because if you solve a problem, your funding ends." Michael Crichton, "State of Fear," Harper Collins Publishers, 2004, page 565.

"TJ grew up in Colorado and is a graduate of Columbine High School"

Gee Kevin, and I thought we were getting along so well...

I was just feeding you righties back one of your favorite lines. Such reactivity! Don't go gettin' yer panties all in a wad now.

And please spare me the hypocracy rant.

BNN, good one! OK, I was wrong, you can be funny on occassion.
.

"anon, with a name like the Heartland Institute, I can assure you that you will get a completely unbiased and objective source of information. NOT"

And an unbiased opinion is claiming there is consensus on human-caused global warming? If Heartland is so biased, why wasn't the result of their question something like 95% negative instead of roughly half and half with another 10% undecided? My point is that consensus among people who should actually know (climatologists) does not exist. So why are the media and various environmentalists in such a rush do something now, now, now? Is it because they want us to give away the store before even more solid evidence emerges from the scientific community that they are wrong?

How about a federal broccoli eradication program?

All we have to do is get rid of the livestock. Scientists have proven that "methane flatulence" is a major contributor to global warming. So if we kill all the cows and nobody eats beans, we'll all be okay.

jj

why dont you move to a wacko lib town like.... oh ya nevermind

ahh, so love it or leave it jj? Funny how the left always goes balistic when you say that to them, but of course it's perfectly fine for them to use. Just another example of leftist hypocrisy.

There was a very interesting article in Discover magazine a couple of months ago about a Norwegian scientist who did a study that linked global warming to solar activity-not human activity. Global warming may be real but I do not believe that puny little man is responsible for it. I think the whole thing is a big scare campaign to get everyone to do what the environuts want us to do. I for one do not intend to change my lifestyle one iota to "fight" global warming. The biggest threat to this planet is not global warming but overpopulation, but no one ever wants to talk about that.

$25K for "expert" speakers? So, do you think the Olympian will take it upon themselves to publish a follow-up atricle addressing the outrage expressed over another self-serving city council decision? If the council is nothing at all, they remain consistently embarrassing representatives of the majority of this community...

Kevin, see what I mean....

anon, with a name like the Heartland Institute, I can assure you that you will get a completely unbiased and objective source of information. NOT!

C'mon, folks, you are going to have to do better than that. The Heartland Institute is a right-wing, corporate funded think tank. They are against global warming because it's bad for business.

I encourage you to do some REAL research outside the echo chamber.

I hate to admit it, but BNN is on to something. There is evidence to support that the gaseous emissions from large corporate cattle and pig farms are a huge source of greenhouse gas. I'm sure you'll have fun with that one, BNN. It is certainly up your alley.

I think this is the whiniest thread I've read in a long time. Why don't you folks just move to a nice little conservative town somewhere in Idaho or Nebraska?
...

I think Williams is worth a listen to.. I've read a few of her books and have been deeply impressed. She is a scientist/environmentalist and has spent many years not behind a desk but in the field with hand and eye observations to guide her.
I am typically a Conservative but do keep an open mind..

One has to wonder about TJ's connection to Terry Williams.... TJ grew up in Colorado and is a graduate of Columbine High School and the University of Northern Colorado, and an alumni of the Master of Environmental Studies (MES) program at The Evergreen State College.

May be the two speakers are friends of TJ's in college.

Why don't they use the fund to fix some sidewalks in the dowtown or to accommodate the housing for the homeless in the coming winter seasons.

It's time for us to cast our votes!

The debate's over, man made global warming is a crock.
Besides, if it was true, we'd just evolve around it.

If you ask the right people you can get a unanimous answer. It may be skewed and biased but, it will be unanimous. Furthermore just because you write about simething does not make you an expert on it.

anon -
You reenforced my point exactly. Human impact on alleged global warming is miniscule. There are far greater depositors of CO2 and particulate matter in our atmosphere than us. Coal fires in China, forest fires all over the globe, volcanic activity...all of these dump far, far more into the air than human activity does. Why don't the do-gooders try tackling some of those problems first.

I for one believe global warming is coming and only man (women too) can stop this. I vow to never have flatulence again. I will cork every cow I see and never BBQ again. in the name of earth i vow to never look at any volcano again!

jj I asked you to join me in my flatulence ban, except you may not be able to as you seem to release yours from the mouth or maybe you talk out your .....

jj again with the kool-aid? you are starting to scare me. I really think you may need kool-aid anonymous

In a study by the DOE ("Current Greenhouse Gas Concentrations" updated October, 2000 DOE Oak Ridge, Tennessee) manmade contributions of carbon dioxide since the Industrial Age began account for only 3.225% of that particular gas in the atmosphere. Mother Nature is responsible for the other 96.775% of CO2.

When fuel is properly and completely burned up, the byproducts are carbon dioxide and water vapor. When a car is tuned up, it does a pretty good job of consuming the gasoline used therein.
You do far more damage to the environment by composting your yard waste, which releases a ton of methane gas, a greenhouse gas that is 100 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Better to burn it or bury it than to compost it. But that doesn't feel good, because how you feel about yourself is far more important than actually doing the right thing.

Look up in the sky on a clear day. The sun is responsible for the vast majority of the warming we are experiencing, and it will be responsible for the cooling that will inevitably come. It has been going through cycles of increased and decreased levels of output since time began.

Any temperature variation caused by humans is more likely due to the changes we have made to the landscape of the earth. The deforestation of Europe, for example. Large islands of concrete for our cities. But even those variations are small because they are relatively isolated. New York City is big, but New York State is much bigger and mostly forest and farmland.

$25,000 to bring a couple non-experts to tout junk science. Just another reason to ignore downtown Olympia.

Knot Gym....Having at one time lived in Berkeley I assure you that Oly makes Berkeley seem "middle of the road"

"Friends don't let friends read the NYT"

jj, I'm not arguing the merits of the lecture. It may very well be a worthwhile event, that's not for me to say. However why can't they CHARGE for the tickets instead of using taxpayer money (or have a private group pay)? Would you be saying the same thing if Olympia paid for John Lott to speak about how concealed carry laws lower the crime rate in every city where it's been implemented? (yeah I know I'm dreaming but the comparison still holds). This isn't an attack against one side or the other, both are great at wasting our money and I'm damn tired of it.

"...there is near unanimous agreement within the world's scientific community that our global climate is changing at an unprecedented rate. This is a fact."
jj | 09.13.07 - 1:22 pm

The Heartland Institute conducted a survey of 530 climate scientists (not non-experts like the City of Olympia will be parading downtown) from 27 different countries and asked them to score the following statement: "Natural scientists have established enough physical evidence to turn the issue of global climate change over to social scientists for matters of policy discussion." Nearly half (45.8 percent) disagreed with the statement, and an additional 10.2 percent were undecided. Only 44.1 percent agreed.

Nearly unanimous? Maybe only in the mainstream media.

Get over it folks. Here is some perspective for you...

According to a recent article in the Seattle Times, the war in Iraq is costing us over $100,000 per MINUTE.

A big thanks to the City of Oly for doing this. It's my tax money too and I'm fine with it.

Kevin, in response to your post, my answer is...why bother?

It's the same old tired, dido-head rhetoric.

I don't think anyone knows what's going to happen, but there is near unanimous agreement within the world's scientific community that our global climate is changing at an unprecedented rate. This is a fact.

It wasn't too far back in time that people thought the earth was flat. Voicing a differing opinion back then could be deadly.

I'll tell you one thing though. If I was going to build the new City Hall in the old Safeway location, I would put it on stilts and add a dock on the side facing the sound!
...

What a waste of our hard earned money!!!! What a bunch of idiots. Why don't we use the money for something good????? By something good I mean we could feed the hungry fill potholes, put in sidewalks, paint stripes for crosswalks, hire anouther cop. drug/alcohol prevention. Come on something?????

i am glad they are doing this!

I can't believe that nobody is demanding an investigation into the questionable ethics of the city council. In less than a month they have for all intents and purposes laid something like 700k worth of profit into the hands of a private developer who did nothing more than flip a property that he ultimately knew he would sell to the city. Ever wonder why council meetings involving property acquisitions are allowed to be conducted behind closed doors? Nobody is asking the questions? They are forcing out a small business for which downtown Olympia is all about supporting, yah he'll get bought out, but you can't replace income from a functioning profitable business. They thumb their noses at our military personnel by saying that they can't afford the police presence to manage the protestors who no doubt would have been organized and led by TJ Johnson. And now they appropriate 25k or more to bring a couple of self proclaimed experts to Olympia to "educate" about global warming. The only people that are going to show up to listen are the same brain dead, moron, Algore worshipers who unknowingly are serving to be pawns in a game for which the purpose is to convince the unwashed masses that the sky is falling, or is it the sea is rising. A society that is afraid for their safety and security is a society that is easily manipulated and most importantly controlled.

This is truly terrifying people, wake up it's your tax dollars being so grossly misused.

Anonymous Bob you are right on target. Good job!

This is a good thing. Terry Williams BIO states:
Williams is a Utah native, descended from five or six generations of Mormon pioneers. “I write through my biases of gender, geography, and culture,” she says. “I am a woman whose ideas have been shaped by the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau.”
She is highly qualified to speak of warm temperatures.

Global Climate modeling (GCM)is not even close to being able to make acurate predictions. While climate change is nothing new to earth these wacko's try and blame CO2 for creating the effects we are seeing. Wasn't to long ago the world was 5 degrees hotter...it cooled. natural cycles. in 1934 there were reports of glaciers melting and some of the hottets years on record. We slipped back into a cooling phase and the world thought we were entering an ice age. This is natural. The effects are minimal where man made co2 is concerned.

WASTE of money.

I love it when people can't articulate the facts so they throw out names like "Kool Aid Convention" and "whiners". How about you give the other side of the story? I haven't seen a post yet saying why this is a good thing. Please tell us why tax dollars have to be used for this? I know we are just uneducated fools who don't like seeing our tax dollars wasted, so lets hear it oh enlightened ones...

Of course contractors and consultants living off of the government "dole" (sure they "work" for it, kinda) is ALL the RAGE- just start with Halliburton/KBR and work your way down, "have gun will travel" (the high paid mercenaries and contractors our troops protect in Iraq) right down to the idiot who told Doug MacDonals that those stupid cable barriers "will save lives". Now this... it's all cool, a GREAT WAY TO MAKE A LIVING, off of tax dollars. Woooo! Woooooooo!
What's that sound? The gravey train, comin' 'round the bend.

I think Olympia can now compete with the likes of Bezerkeley as one of the most wacked-out, liberal cities. The largest purpose of our capital city is to redistribute taxpayer money to the various parasitic constituencies.

Once again, we see; if you're a governmental agency, city council, governor's office, DOT, fish, game, prison, wealthfare, what ever, YOU NEED a CONSULTANT! They're EXPENSIVE, UN ACCOUNTABLE, SELF SERVING, and THEY MAKE YOUR OFFICE or AGENCY LOOK "OFFICIAL" in the PERFORMANCE OF IT'S DUTIES!
It only cost "a little". $$$$$$$$$$!

by the way, yeaah, I do think that climate change should be considered as we plan.

Does anyone know how the vote went? )Obviously TJ Jihad Johnson was for it, and I'm sure Karen Bike Lane Messmer, and Laura the Whale Ware. I just wonder which of the free thinkers allowed this to happen? Or is it a little political back scratching, as in I'll vote for your ridiculous freak show "the sea is rising and its all our fault" act, if you'll vote for my neighborhood's road to be the next project on the gravey train. Interesting.
Plus, I'm sure Joe Hyer abstained from this, as his business would be in the affected area of an sea rising/sky falling event.

"To raise awareness about global warming and its potential effect on Olympia, city leaders are bringing two environmental authors to town next month for a free lecture"

I wish the Olympian would have properly written this introductory statement. "To raise awareness about global warming and its potential effect on Olympia, city leaders are bringing two environmental authors to town next month for a tax payer subsidized lecture. Although there will be no admission fee at the door, Olympia taxpayers will be picking up the tab for the small minority of people that will be attending. By the way if anybody living outside of Olympia would like to attend this event, feel free to do so and don't forget to thank the Olympia taxpayers who have sponsored it for you."

EXCELLENT point scott!!!
Why weren't these funds available then? What a crock.

I couldn't have said anything better than what all of you have said right here. I live out in the county, but making purchases in Olympia only supports the wacky, off-the-wall, out-of-touch crap that the Olympia city council keeps on putting out.

The libs and especially the greeners will be lining up to get the tickets to see more info spewed on the biggest farces in history.....environmentalism.

LMAO at the misinformed humans in this world.

A mixed call for me here. A woman friend of mine (cancer survivor) had me read Williams book "Refuge" Conservative (like me most issues) or Liberal, do yourself a favor and read it. Williams is an Enviromentalist btw.
Revkin and the NYT? Outside of the crossword puzzles and the Sunday Book section I would not line my cat's litter box with the remainder.

Scott hit the nail on the head!! No money for extra police so my children can see military ships that protect my freedom. No money for more firefighters to protect all the people that live in Olympia. But the have the money to bring two guys to tell us about something that is obvious to all. Greeners, gotta love 'em.

What a complete farce!

"Williams is promoted as a "citizen writer" who writes about environmental issues as social justice, but cannot be categorized. Her biography, on the city's Web site, includes testifying before Congress on women's health issues, camping in remote areas of Utah and Alaska and working as a "barefoot artist" in Rawanda. Her latest book, "Mosaic: Finding Beauty in a Broken World," will be published in 2008."

The headline of the story says they're bringing warming "experts" to speak. This person's own bio says she "can't be categorized" but the city council claims her to be an "expert". Look at this person's credentials. This is hilarious - camping in remote areas of Utah and Alaska and working as a "barefoot artist" in Rawanda. I couldn't have made this up to be any more ridiculous if I tried. It really is a shame. I think there should be an open and honest debate about these issues. It is a continuing (common) theme among the left that they accuse people on the right of being close-minded but time, time and time again they are not interested in having open, honest dialogue about different issues. The funny (or sad) part about this is that it is happening with city money.

Let me guess - they'll probably have pictures of dead polar bears. They'll probably show a slide of their high priest (Al Gore) that will cause a big cheer. As the "experts" speak, I'm sure some people will be brought to tears and overcome with guilt and shame. Then they'll leave the "discussion" with a vengance ready to blame the evil oil companies or .

I saw a Democratic (former) Senator from Alaska who is running for the Dem nomination say on Bill Mahr's show last week that if we don't take drastic steps now that humans won't be around in 100 years. I'm not making this up.

This is seriously so funny I couldn't make this up!

In my opinion: The city gets conflicting statements about global warming affects on rising sea levels. Many see city council as split, undecided and seemingly unaware about global warming. City wants to put new City Hall on flood plain but needs experts to show roughly how high the water may or may not go to affect their project(s).

City also wants to show they care about global warming and try to avoid citizen's lawsuits they bring in paid experts. If they end up in court they can say they made a reasonable effort to educate themselves and the public on global warming affects. A defense then may be: "If the waters rise then don't blame the city council for putting the new city hall and other buildings near current sea level."

How about paying someone to come in and talk about taking all the graffiti off of the signs?

This is where your priorities are apparently.

Hmmm, why isn't anyone commenting in support of these speakers?

Bad decision Olympia.

I just turned on my 'puter to write a blistering comment or two re; the city council. I see a very good job has been done by the regular posters. Makes me proud.

How convenient - bring in a couple of unqualified people (presumably no reputable scientists would say what the council wants to hear, given that so-called global warming is an utter farce), let them vomit forth some pseudo-factual information, call the truly ignorant to arms to tilt at windmills, and then accept no questions from the audience so that the emperors can remain ensconsed in the belief that they're actually wearing clothes! The story reads like a propoganda exercise. Will there be brownshirts around to keep people who disagree from exercising their first amendment rights to free speech, or can the audience heckle at will?

Utterly amazing but not surprising given what governs your City Council.

The residents of Olympia should file a lawsuit against TJ Johnson and require HIM to personally repay the claim. Maybe that would put an end to his ridiculous shenanigans and the lackey's who follow his lead and allow him to bully them into voting his way.

Glad I live in Thurston County!

The majority of greenhouse gasses on the planet come from coal fires in China that were started hundreds of years ago by lightning. The smoke and CO2 from these fires, where the hills literally glow from the subterranean fire, exceed the CO2 output of every automobile and factory in the western hemisphere. You never hear the Greeners talk about that though, do you? Because it doesn't fit into their agenda, that's why.

If you find this to be as ridiculous as I, you need only vote out the council members currently up for election. Keep doing so each election until the current crop of miscreants is gone. Most important - don't fall into the "all politicians are bad, except the ones from MY district". Clean house and start over with reasonable, intelligent people. Keep the hippies out of the council chamber.

well at least it show liberals aren't against all faith based belief systems. it amazes me that they think they have to pay someone 25k to spew this crap. hell i don't believe in it but could spew the same garbage and i would do it for a beer and a sandwich.

Nice comment, Brian! Right on the mark.

"Citizen writer" Williams confuses me. I can't understand how her writing on social justice, or how "testifying before Congress on women's health issues, camping in remote areas of Utah and Alaska and working as a "barefoot artist" in Rawanda" qualify her as "someone who really know(s) what they're talking about."

Thanks

I have called in and left a message w the city on this.

Excellent point, Scott.

And the same city that's begging for a sales tax increase "for the children".

Is this the kind of expenditure they'll make to to "educate" the children?

Dont forget folks....

This is the same city of olympia that refused to support the US military ships because it would "cost" too much.

But now they have all the money in the world for their global warming bs.

Bias anyone?

The council will pay each speaker $12,500 — plus travel and lodging costs — from discretionary funds.

I bet everyone wishes they had an extra $25K in discretionary funds to do as they please.

Brian,
Could not have said it better myself. Thank you for saving me the trouble of attempting to articulate those thoughts.

Great!

We have to pay for the leftys disaster fantasies.

Great....

Once again the political fat cats spending our money like a fat kid in a candy store. Why not just invite some of the "Greeners" from our local "School" and show the Al Gore Movie?

Wouldnt that save about $24,995.00 of the taxpayers hard earned dollars?

I bet Blockbuster carries it in stock.

What no Gore-acle? What a rip off. TJ get youself an ark. Put 2 of everything you want to save in it and then float it out into the middle of the sound and wait for the water to rise.

Let me get this straight:

The city is paying $25,000 (plus travel and lodging, but how much can it cost to drive two Prius' from the east coast?) for SIXTY MINUTES OF BIASED BLAH-BLAH on one side (only) of a trumped up issue.

In the democratic tradition of the City Council, "Each speaker will lecture for 30 minutes. No questions from the audience will be taken. "

That's $413. per minute or approximately $4.13 per word.

Wow.

I appreciate the effort to raise awareness about global warming, but I can't understand why the city has spent so much money on global issues. The job of the city council is to manage the city, not the entire world. I applaud city leaders for being passionate about global problems, however, they should do it on their own time, not with city tax dollars.

As the name implies!!!! $25,000 dollars? And the city is in need to raise their levy? Sounds to me like there are more extremists than just good ol' TJ on that council! Good Luck OFD getting your 4th station with the city spending 4 million on Safeway, and flagrant and irresponsible spending for TJ's hobbies.
