I had it reported to me at the protest site a few hours ago that a majortiy of the almost 20 that have now been gas-blasted and booked are residents in the Olympia area.
I'd like to know why it's illegal for me to leave my kids locked in my car while I run inside to pay for the gas, but these people can bring thier kids to a riot where tear gas and pepper spray are being discharged and they arent facing child endangerment charges?
I didn't see a single person there I recognized as a local.

The streets are for vehicle traffic, the sidewalks are for pedestrian traffic. Plain and simple. The throwing of rocks, we were all taught that that was wrong when we were kids, were we not? Spitting on anyone is an assualt in my book! Anyone running around the streets with a mask on when it is not Halloween should be taken in for questioning if for no other reason. Everyone knows that there is a peaceful way to protest and there is a violent way. The people who went into the streets in Olympia knew what they were doing and must be held accountable for their actions.

One could even state what they believe to be true facts. Then someone could dipute those facts in return. But the name calling and the foul language really needs to stop. I watched the video and I was actually standing there when this alleged assault happened on this girl. She was asked numerous times before to get out of the street and said NO. She was moved with his baton after she refused to obey a lawful order. She continued to try and impede traffic.

I do talk to soldiers...I talk to my brother who has been to Iraq several times since the war started. Regardless of how I feel about the war I support what he does and why he does it. Today, if the lady was assaulted, I have no doubt she had it coming. You want the police officers to reveal their identity? That would give you an opening to assault them. If you are going to obstruct people from carrying on with their lives, you need to quietly accept your lumps. By all means, do it. OPD will get the overtime from somewhere. In my opinion: I continue to read this blog and the ones fomenting the port protestors. People are flying in here as fast as possible, some paying up to 4,000$ for one way tickets to get here. You have professional protestors and agitators coming here with a couple of high ranking lawyers. Who is paying for these people? From what I saw on Plum street this is not peaceful protest but mini-WTO.
The "hate America first" blogs are talking about bringing in many more people to take over the streets. They want to make a point in Olympia and push the situation futher than what they did in Seattle. If these protestors came here fully prepared to do damage and riot then the authorities need to go after them in court using RICO and take their money from them and their rich benefactors.
I said this was going to get out of hand and it has just started. This event is drawing in some real criminal anarchists from the European riots. This is not going to be just another greener event. I saw some young kids walking around the place while the police and protestors were confronting each other. Maybe Child Services ought to be called on this one for the parent who took her kids there.
From what I am reading the lawyers have already prepared the usual "civil rights violations" lawsuits against Olympia, et.el. Olympia could be looking at millions in legal fees defending themselves against these agitators. Well, tomorrow is another day and the protestors want more publicity.

I don't really support the war, and I guess there is nothing wrong with a peaceful protest.
But... the video shows protestors blocking traffic and attacking people who have nothing to do with the Port or the military as far as we can tell from the video.
Masked criminals blocking some lady's vehicle and throwing around big rocks would certainly put her in reasonable fear that she was about to be harmed.

Watch the video and look at the pictures. Do you think those dumpsters and trash cans that were thrown into the road belonged to those protesters? Were the cops and truck drivers working for free while they waited for these characters to get out of the way?

One was "working" the other day, as reported in the Olympian that a woman came home to her house being burglarized on Steamboat Island. After all they have to get money for their drugs some how right. They can't all be as "lucky" as the woman with her kids protesting and live off food stamps.
FINALLY! This is so cool that the police are picking these pukes up and putting them where they belong... in jail! What in the world do they think they're accomplishing. They complain when the troops go to war, and complain when they come home. I'm so embarassed to live, work, or associate with these anarchists who complain for the sake of complaining.

I think that OPD is doing the best they can under the conditions thay have to work with. They can't touch the protesters or thay are the bad guys. I think that OPD should arrest all the protesters if they try to stop anybody from doing there job. Put them all in one cell and feed them bread and water until the milatary transfers there equipment. I don't think that anybody has the right to stop somebody from doing there jobs. If they want to protest why don't they all go to Iraq and take it up with them. The protesters don't seem to like anything that we do in this country to protect them.

What really bothers me is that from looking at the pictures it's obvious that the vast majority of these folks aren't even locals (although I’m sure that some are and to you I apologize). They are out of town brats who have come here to go to college. How can they claim that they have taken back "our port?" Most of them are guests in this town and they obviously don't have even the basic decency to treat the rest of the rest of us with respect. It’s like visiting someone’s home and defecating in their living room! You have shown who you really are.

So they did what they could to slow the movement of war and they gaie the pigs practice arresting people and performing minor crowd control. Good job for the protesters to risk freedom for a noble purpose of taking a stand aginst war. I dont care if it cost me a few tax dollars to deal with them, or a longer drive around the Plum street I-5 on ramp .

Zamboni, As I believe the protesters did no property damage and were certainly not violent. From people I've talked to the police walked up to sitting people, pulled off their goffles and sprated pepper spray directly in their eyes and then began clubbing them with batons. A 14 year old boy was walking along an stepped barely off the curb with ONE foot and a cop shot him point blank with a pepper gun bullel multiple times. It makes sense, read it again, THIS MESS BELONGS TO ALL OF US. THE DEAD AND INJURED ON BOTH SIDES BELONG TO US. THOSE PEPPER SPRAYED ARE US TOO, LIKE IT OR NOT.

I went down to the port this morning. Right after the cops threw a dash of pepper on people.
Let's see, now the pro-war/pro-death people can't whine about the protesters bringing children to the protest. A few of pro-war war folks brought their children (you know, the guy in the blue and black flannel and the clown in the brown hat kissing the cops butt near the intersection). It's too dangerous for kids to be around this. Please keep your kids at home!

One uneducated young lady wearing an "Army" sweatshirt embarrassed the hell out of everyone when she yelled something about the Iraqis stealing American planes and crashing them into the twin towers...everyone laughed and reminded her that they were Saudis that attacked us. It was pretty pathetic. She eventually took her infant back to her truck. There was probably a NASCAR event going on that she didn't want to miss.
What else? Oh, while the cops focused their riot gear on the port, protesters scattered themselves all the way down plumb street. There was no way the cops could handle the mob of people. It was pretty chaotic.

Diana, I support America too, I pay taxes and vote and raise kids. I'm an Eagle Scout, worked in community organizations, my grandmother served as a Republican State representative AND I could go on.
Those people are citizens and here those who are so right, believe that to belittle and threaten violence against those who are not violent shows a scar on MY country. Oh I am ashamed at the seething pain you wish to inflict on those who are asking US to look at the results of our policy! The real threat is that we will acknowledge WE are responsible for that. I was wondering how actively aware we are of the implications of what we support either by standing against the war or, standing for it.
To the supporters, we have certainly, family serving or retired, or in harms way. We have traditional values of love of country and church structures as well. Some churches have stood against, some for, though probably not actively.
Nobel causes and reasons to secure their futures, to be sure.
To those who rally for peace and an end to occupation or at least a vastly different approach, there may or not be knowledge of the 1.3 million orphaned children, 3+ million displaced refugees, perhaps as many as 3/4 of a million killed and countless millions maimed or wounded as a result of our tipping over the tea cart of Iraq.
Neither side sees, we did this together, and only together can we change course. The more bitterness does not change the facts, nor does it stop the war.

This is getting beyond out of hand. How do any of you think this reflects on Olympia itself? OPD is doing what they think is best for the situation at hand. If the protesters don’t want to be arrested, sprayed with pepper spray, end up being dragged away from where ever they are then perhaps they should disperse and leave well enough alone. I’m only getting what is being reported and I’m fully disgusted by nearly everything that has been reported. My husband and I went down there today... to watch and honk in support of the convoys. The police did a terrific job. Pity the poor protestors? phooey. This is what they do for fun and they'd have been disappointed if they didn't get it. The cops, the truckers, the port workers... they're the ones doing the good work.

This is why I hate the OPD.
Those poor kids. They knew they might get hurt when they were protesting, but it doesn't break my heart any less to see them, especially the girls, crying and in pain, being dragged through the streets. What kind of world do we live in where that is ok? I know for a fact that they were trying to clear the way once they started spraying, but the police followed them down the street and beat and sprayed them. Horrid.
Why couldn't the cops at least protect the truck drivers' property? Instead, hard-working drivers already on the losing side due to fuel costs now have to buy new equipment! I think they should sue the City of Olympia for the replacement costs for that stolen equipment. After all, the Olympia cops knew what they were dealing with and should have anticipated that the "protesters" would turn out to be thieves in addition to child abusers.
I'm an Olympia resident, and I don't want my taxes misused by OPD mal- and misfeasance! Get out there and serve and protect!!! However, perhaps TJ Johnson and his ilk on the Olympia City Council are responsible for this lack of serving and protecting.... if so, they ought to be ashamed of themselves! Police were using electric saws to cut through lockboxes as protesters were linked together to form a human blockade at Plum & Union. There have been 8 or 9 arrests so far. There is an OPD crime scene van there supplying power. Evidently, the police are, at this point, ready to deploy to another location if needed.
GO GET THEM OPD! Use whatever force is necessary.

Kaitlyn: These protestors have every right to peacefully assemble and protest. They could have stepped aside and shouted all kinds of nasty things at the drivers of the cargo. Their intent was to purposefully stop a military cargo movement. That is where their right to assemble ends. If a bunch of people that don't like you gather together on the street in front of your driveway and form a human barricade to prevent you from entering your home - will you support their right to assemble then? How about if someone is trying to deliver food and supplies to your house and a bunch of folks decide to gather peacefully and protest by blocking entrance and not letting them through?
How could you miss something so obvious?
When you frame this as a violation of their rights to freely assemble and free speech you do everyone a diservice.

Anti-war demonstrators have "locked down" on Plum Street freeway on ramp to I-5 North.
After numerous incidences of police brutality this morning in which an Olympian photographer was pepper spread, bystanders were sprayed with pepper spray, and protesters were beaten and directly aimed at eyes with pepper spray, blockades continue through the streets of our home.
Olympia Port Militarization Resistance have successfully blocked military convoys from reaching Fort Lewis. During convoy movements on Wednesday nights support was seen by soldiers moving Stryker vehicles with raised fist and peace signs as demonstrators chanted, "Love the soldier. Hate the war."

You claim to love this country, pro-war or not, and then you decry one of its pillars, the right to unabridged free speech, assembly, and protest. Why do you hate these people so much? The Mrs. and I just drove to downtown Olympia for lunch. No problem. Then we swung down to the Farmers Market. It's doing a banner business. Lots of people shopping, talking, having a good time on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Drove past the port entrance. Got a big salute from the veterans group staked out on the corner with their flags. Only a handful what appeared to be protesters were milling about on the sidewalk.
Ah ... then tried to get on I-5 from Plum Street. That's where the action was. About 10 or so protesters were sitting across the middle of the street with their arms outstretched through some sort of tubing. We pulled over and watched for a while. OPD put on quite a show -- went from person to person and removed them. Well done!!
Looked like mainly a bunch of college-age kids with nothing much else to do.

If the protesters are dressed for action with goggles, etc, then they knew exactly what would happen. I think the woman crying in pain was just adding to the drama of the event.(Though, I have heard from men trained for police work who have had to experience being pepper sprayed during training that it is indeed not something to be trifled with).
I am proud of our police, the troops and the truckers who were involved for showing a great deal of restraint and patience.
The port belongs to the community and not some small group of youngsters who haven't lived enough of life to see the whole picture.

They had to know that after yesterday's protest their protesting again today would bring out the batons and pepper spray. Now they will claim excessive force by the police.
