I'll bet that was humorous to see today. Probably looked like something off sesame street. Some kids marching and protesting in a circles to the right and others marching and protesting to the left.

Kinda like musical chairs or a pta cake walk. I'm sure it was cute.

Washington - More than one in 100 adults in the United States were behind bars for the first time in history at the start of 2008, placing a serious strain on state budgets and calling into question their reliance on prisons as the best means of punishment, according to a new report issued Thursday. The Pew Center on the States' Public Safety Performance Project, which compiled the data from state and federal sources, said 2,319,258 people were in prison at the beginning of the year after an increase of more than 25,000 people during 2007.

The report said that the higher incarceration rates were not related to an uptick in crime or the population in general, but rather to policy measures.

"For all the money spent on corrections today, there hasn't been a clear and convincing return for public safety," Adam Geib, director of the Pew project said in a statement.

But Geib said states were now beginning to "rethink their reliance on prisons" and testing out community-based punishments that may be equally effective and reduce the strain on correctional facilities.

The report said that one in 30 men aged between 20 and 34 were jailed, while 1 in 9 African American men of the same age were incarcerated. Men were 13 times more likely to be in jail than women.

All Evergreen hating cop lovers should move to Michigan

http://www.mlive.com/newsflash/ m...st=michigannews

The real issue is that we have such incompetent cops that no one has been, or will be arrested for the Valentines Day Riot at Evergreen.

But Doc Holliday, the thing that makes America great is the people can express themselves without fear of being imprisoned. You sound as though you want to change America the Free to America the Police State. Just because you disagree with somebody doesn't make them criminals or terrorists. But maybe we should take a nation wide vote. And anybody that supports war will get thrown in prison and be considered a violent criminal not safe to be at large! That would actually be sane!

It's great to see some pro police protesters actually protesting the anarchists!

OK, Let's take a community vote....

How many would like to gather these "anti-police" idiots, place them into a bus and send the over to Iraq so they can protest over there...

My guess is, they would not last 5 minutes in public... and would probably call for the "police" to help them.... Uhmmmm

Let's vote!

Who cares? Greeners will protest sunshine in the summer and rain in the winter. Nobody pays attention to them anymore. Which is unfortunate when they finally do stumble upon a worthy cause.

I still don't understand why they are protesting and not doing homework or actively pursuing an education?

Those people who are listing cases of bad cops from the news are just showing their ignorance.

If you look hard enough you can find articles about dishonest cops, or dishonest insurance salesmen, or dishonest politicians, (these are much easier to find), dishonest professors, etc. Every occupation has it's bad apples.

To denounce the police is just plain stupid.

I have a theory.

Have some plain clothed policemen circulate through the anti-police protesters checking their faces against a montage of pictures of the ones who caused the damage and they will scatter like the wind.

Simple fix here. Close Evergreen!

As a police officer I could care less what Evergreen College Students think of me and my profession.

If you claim independence from the law - you cannot turn around and claim protection from the law. That's called being a hypocrite.

The police did what they were supposed to do. Follow the rules - the police leave you alone. If you choose to ignore the police - don't get upset when they ignore you when you're screaming for help.

Sounds like some college students need to start reading a little deeper in philosophy.

The Olympian has always profited and fueled local hatred of Evergreen as a way of selling its fishwrapper.

Nothing has chanced in almost 40 years except that now the few of you pawns who believe this crap can now rant online instead of just talking back to the voices in your heads.

Those that hopefully go to jail. Don't forgot your floss too.

liberals aren't tagging the west side; anarchists are. get your story straight.

To all fellow posters,
The comments in this blog are really entertaining and educational, some are even a little wacko (that's both sides of the fence). But today's story confirms what I have suspected all along....it's just a few people and not the opinion of the Greener masses that is causing all of the trouble here. Niiiice.

Support for the police would be nice, but they really just don't like that the police got their feelings hurt when the rioters destroyed their equipment. The fact that they held a public protest just proves that TESC is a hopeless pile of impotent stupidity.

Abolish TESC now!

Woof:

Please. As if you will find your Utopia... your Shangri-la somewhere else. Where are you going to move? Chehalis? Shelton? Oh... I know... Tacoma! No problems there!!! Good luck on your quixotic search for paradise!!!

From my view, Olympia is actually rather odd amongst growing communities. Most communities are rather conservative when small and become more liberal as they grow. Olympia appears that it started liberal and is growing more conservative as the "money" (from ex-King County residents) starts moving in.

As evidenced by the growing incidences of vandalism spouting anti-government or anti-capitalism slogans around West Olympia, the liberals have pent-up angst... the type of angst that fueled the Evergreen State College riot and these protests today. I predict that more events like this will occur (not necessarily at TESC) in our city in the coming years, perhaps with worsening severity.

What I find rather ironic about this whole situation is that the politically liberal folks are the ones frustrated with the change going on in our city, which makes them actually the "conservatives" here. The more politically moderate and conservative folks moving into this city are actually the ones sparking change, which actually makes them the "liberals" in this situation.

Hi, Karen.

You really must do something about this obsession of yours. People are starting to talk.

Uh C - Watch this and for proof most of the protesters were TESC students.

http://www.olyblog.net/its-bigge...-bigger-hip- hop

Then come back and admit YOU'RE the turd.

Jar,

Are you joking?

The Olympian is one of the most liberal papers in the country. They sell thousands of papers anytime something sensational like a protest happens.

They actually are using those idiots. Its about making money, not reporting. The media are leeches.

I agree that there must be some kind of collusion going on between the Olympian and this small group of "protesters". Or else the Olympian is out to "get" Evergreen. I talked to two people who saw the "protest" and they both said it was barely 20 kids, the vast majority of students (hundreds!) were there to support the police or to make fun of the protesters! Why is the Olympian misrepresenting what happened? I really have lost a lot of confidence in the Olympian based on how they have covered this whole incident, it's become abundantly clear that they let they are either prejudiced against Evergreen or they are pandering to the anti-Evergreen crowd in Olympia.

I back the students who demonstate for civil rights and for what they deem as a war without cause and the present police state tacitcs of abuse so prevalent not just here but all over the US and becry that more people cannot see or deliberately ignore it wether out of complacency or ignroance.
Just because some accept the status quo, even the majority, does not make the staus q

"THE JUNK MAN"
I am glad God saw Death
And gave Death a job taking care of all who are tired of living;

When all the wheels in a clock are worn and slow and the connections loose

And the clock goes on ticking and telling the wrong time from hour to hour

And the people around the house joke about what a bum clock it is'

How glad the clock is when the big Junk Man drives his wagon

Up to the house and puts his arms around the clock and says;

"You Don't belong here,
You gotta come
Along with me."

How glad the clock is then when it feels the arms of the Junk Man close around it and carry it away.

Once the poem was for the aged of this earth but today it could be talking about freedom and democratic principles that the public found too bothersome and made light of it so they called and allowed the Junk Man to haul it away.

At least its rememberances are still ticking in the hearts of some young men and women.

i agree with the posts that say you only dislike the police if you are breaking the law. quite a few years ago we had a fourth of july party at our house, the neighbers were pissed before it even got going. i should point out that we had a harrassment order against them. no loud music, no fire works yet. just drinks and ribs on the far side of the house away fom them. they saw the cars and reported all sorts of crazy crap, drugs underage drinking, you name it. when the police showed up the neighbers stood onntheir porch waiting for a show. the police checked everyhting out and were pleased that nothing bad was actually happening, well i was pissed because they had called to mess with us yet a gain. so having had a few drinks in me and mad at their crap i fipped out, started to scream over the fence, got totally out of control. the cop talked to my husband and under stood the situation, but said i either needed to calm down or i would be spending the evening in jail. he stayed for over half an hour to make sure i was calm, and then talked to them about false reporting. the police gave me a break when they maybe should not have but i thank them for seeing the situation for what it was.

Al, i'm not clear how that comment is relevant to this report.

On the other hand, it is very relevant to our foreign affairs. The nation "promoting peace" needs the biggest military. Yeah, that's us dude.

As for the turd below who said the majority of protesters were tesc students, that's inaccurate. Not sure where you got your figures, or why you have such a problem with reading comprehension.

For the idiots who staged the anti-police protest, I hope you got a taste of what this campus really feels toward the anarcho-bull that thinks it is welcome in our community. You tarnish the school, you ruin opportunities for students who WANT to make the world better, and your claims of brutality and discrimination are self-fulfilling prophecies. Leave. We don't want you here.

I am so pissed that i was dumb enough to purchase a home in the middle of this ignorant, leftist, cess-pool of a city. I swear if i could just break even on my home i would sell it NOW and leave.
woof | 02.27.08 - 4:34 pm | #

My advice to you woof is to sell now and take the loss. This fine town will be better off without negative people like you.
.

So how do all you bigots who've been ranting like a bunch of nuts about closing Evergreen deal with the fact that the majority of Evergreen students stood up for the cops and are against the rioting minority?

Keep Evergreen open while the Olympian continues to close minds.

Ever notice that the ones who promote peace are the ones who get violent and need extra security?

I guess its easier to preach than to live what you preach?

Its easy to protest and be disrespectful while in the comfort and confines of their safe haven on campus. They know the general public would not support or tolerate their antics elsewhere in this community.
Whether its at the port, on a publically funded college campus, or any city/county street in this community, we the public want our police to protect and serve the public's interest and keep the streets clear of protesters, respond to riots and keep the public peace.

As usual, Band Member doesn't read the article and just doesn't get it. Wake up dude! Read the stuff you post about.

You people need to show your respect. I have never had any problems with the police. You know its a funny thing. But a person that does NOT break the law will never have a problem with the police. So I can see why these Evergreeners are scared of the police.

City cop charged with prostitution of runaway teen

(AP)

A veteran detective was hit with stunning charges Wednesday, accused of pimping out a 13-year-old runaway in Queens, authorities said.

Det. Wayne Taylor, 35, tried to distance himself from the allegations, telling investigators he only drove the teen -- and other girls and young women -- for his girlfriend's exotic dancer business, authorities said.

But Taylor told at least one girl -- the runaway -- to charge customers $40 for oral sex and $80 for intercourse, and to pretend she was 19, District Attorney Richard Brown said.

The sad state of our residents that don't have a clue as to how much revenue that college generates for the community.
Duh, Really?
that is just a pitance compared to the money that would return to the supposed "Downtown "core if they weren't there.

Haha @ the protesters having a larger protest crowd protesting them.

You may be surprised to know that the UofW pays in excess of 14 Million per month to cover its employees healthcare insurance.

Duh - I hate to have to school you this way....well...no I really don't...

You say there are 4500 students that purchase goods, services, rent property and pay sales tax, no to mention tuition and books.

I hate to break it to you....well...no I really don't but most of those students do not pay property tax and their tuition and books are paid for by scholarships and grants.

In one of the videos, it was stated that most of those arrested during the port protests were TESC students. In not being too damned lazy to look up informA(not an s like you spelled it)tion I can tell you out of that entire list, only 5 of those 60+ people arrested had registered to vote and none of them had paid a dime in property tax.

Come on, Duh, Really, be smarter.

I wonder why people persist in being too damned lazy to look up informstion to avoid looking stupid.
Duh, Really? | 02.27.08 - 6:46 pm

The same could be said for you too!

To compare the impact of a very small public liberal arts college with the financial impact of one of the largest research univesities is a futile comparison.

My wife attends TESC and is about to graduate. Throughout her time, I've been impressed with many of the students; particularly those that are returning to finish their education concurrent with working or after a sabattical.

However, and this is typical of many younger, new collegiate students that are away from home for the first time: they are stretching their wings and attempting to find their way. Many times, this way is discovered via extreme behavior. It really is not much different than the young, non-college attending, person who started hitting up the nitelife and occassionaly gets into a brawl. The events have an impact, and one will learn the boundaries.

That being said, the protest today looks about right. A small vocal group wants to "keep the party going". But the (and I use this term loosely) more normal appearing students appear to then answer the call and protest the protesters.

The truth is that the anti-police group should be tolerated. Just like the people on the right tolerate those desiring impeachment. Both groups need to understand that they are supporting futile goals. The sooner this life lesson (the ability to distinquish the possible from the higly improbable) is learned, and the quicker they learn that change occurs through established process, the sooner we have peaceable discourse and solutions.

I guess my UW education really did pay off.

Today I was in a fast food drive through when an officer from the OPD pulled up behind me. I gave my order and pulled up to the pay window. I told the clerk to put the officers order on mine and tell him that a citizen was proud of the OPD and the job they did at TESC! When he pulled up to the window, I saw the employee pointing at my car and the cop honked and waved with a huge smile! I made both his day & mine and it felt damn good! If I ever see a TCSO getting a meal, it will be on me for the same reason too!

If you see an officer, buy them a meal or a cup of coffee! Show them you support them and the job they do and a job well done at TESC!

I wonder why people persist in being too damned lazy to look up informstion to avoid looking stupid.

Largest employer in Seattle?

University of Washington with 27,000 employees.

Yeah...these state colleges are a real drain on communities.

Ellensburg's Largest Employers Include
Central Washington University
Ellensburg School District
Kittatis County
Kittatis Valley Community Hospital
City of Ellensburg

Wanna guess which is the largest?

The simple solution is for local law enforcement to refuse to respond to any calls from the college.

Give them the anarchy they crave.

So any real news out there?

That school, if you can call it a school, should be disbanded. It's a waste of taxpayers' money. No grades? LOL. Just a bunch of pot smokers who think they have a cause.

Anti-police---ignorance.

Anti-police protestors---priceless.

Thanks to the group that is holding the support rally. I should be there and I wish I knew about it earlier.

To the kid holding the sign, 'Hey Cops, Quit Assaulting People'. I have another sign, 'Hey Idiots, Quit Breaking the Law'.

The police are here to protect us. And I am ashamed of people who don't support the police. These are the same thugs that don't support our troops. Evergreeners need to go live in Iraq. See how the police treat them over there.

Support your Police. In the end, they are the only ones really trying to hold back the darkness of anarchy.
I mean it. Without them, there would be no "Rule of Law".

BTW - on a lighter side, here is a link to the funniest police answering service I've ever heard...

Guess what? At a career fair at the college today several schools that usually show up to recruit for teaching jobs did not show because they heard about a protest going on. Way to go Greeners!! After my fam goes into debt to pay for an education, you try to make it harder for us to get jobs, thanks. I will never hate the truly affluent more than now, the Greeners that have the spare time for this sh@#. Can we start impounding and selling their volo's and their parent's Benze's yet?

So the real story here is that enough Greeners care about the police to take time out of their day to show their support despite a vocal minority on campus. Isn't that what most people affiliated with the campus have been saying all along. All you conservatives must be really disappointed about this one....too bad they didn't show up in time for the port protests. Sounds to me like Evergreen really is teaching students to question viewpoints from the right AND the left.

Anonymous:

Yeah...that's why communities have colleges.

Try looking at Ellensburg during the summer.

Another ignorant poster.

I can understand how some people are not in support of police officers. But as in all things in life - do not let the few ruin the reputaion of the many. My father is a retired police officer and is a man of honor. He would help any one of you if he saw you in need, in the line of duty or otherwise. I do not know anyone who goes to Evergreen, but I am hoping the same is true of those students - that not all of them fit the reputation that seems to accompany that group.

Cop sentenced to 57 yrs for killing his pregnant girlfriend

(AP)

A former Ohio police officer was sentenced to at least 57 years in prison today for killing his pregnant lover and her unborn child, after a jury voted to spare his life.

Bobby Cutts Jr., 30, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for 57 years. He had faced a possible death sentence for murdering Jessie Davis and her unborn child, who was to be named Chloe.

I wonder if Kevin Bacon's kid Travis was one of the rich kids taking part of the rioting & police protesting.

Hey, isn't that Prophet Atlantis sitting in the wheelchair in that picture?

I think kids at Evergreen are doing this to simply piss off the people that read the Olympian. I mean honestly how is 50 kids standing in Red Square with 200 kids disagreeing with them worthy news? I think the Olympian and the Anarchists are both getting paid to entertain the conservative populous throughout Thurston County.

This kind of garbage is what's wrong with TESC. The President of the College has to be reading these blogs and it's high time the Administration does something.

If the Administration doesn't understand this, then it's time for a new Administration that will turn the school into something that the citizens of our state can be proud of. Right now, this school is a joke and a waste of out tax dollars.

This is not education. These are punks that have no business taking up a seat in a classroom. They need to leave. And Bohmer needs to be fired.

Gee, I wonder who these idiots will turn to when something of theirs gets stolen, a burglar breaks into their house or dorm, they get beat up or simply run out of gas on a dark road at night.

I begruddingly accept the presence of law enforcement officers, just as long as they aren't writing me a traffic citation.

And, it's my assumption that this protest might prove more affective if it was done outside an actual police station.

The man was completely right.. don't believe he's a professor, but he may be.. either way its nice to see kids organize in opposition to the Oly PD: they def have a horrible history of police brutality. Plus any good lawyer would tell you not to talk to the police.

Hopefully the old hippie professor will stop impacting young and impressionable minds. This is NOT the time for self-governance and justification of illegal behavior on the very grounds of a public institution.

HEGEMONY---figure it out without menacing society.

Did you see on komo 4 news were that nutty professor is getting the Schrammie award. I guess for being so stupid as to encourage students to NOT co operate with the police. That school is a joke.

Its time to stop giving tax money to this cess pool.

Who are they going to call when someone steals their old bike and water bong?

Silly Hippies..."I'm so oppressed, my Yuppie Mommy and Daddy won't give me enough attention."

This is a sad state of of our youth.

Great points rdog. Sure there are some police that are overly violent and use their power inappropriately but the vast majority I've dealt with have been courteous and fair.

I think somebody who would protest those that are anti-police would be called a police supporter.

I don't understand the blanket hate for cops (or any other large and diverse groups). It doesn't make any more sense than racism or sexism to me.

They are a part of the community, they do a job, if you have problems with the job they do, work with one of the branches of our government to try and change that job. Don't just hate cops, it doesn't make sense, and the only thing it accomplishes is creating an us vs. them attitude.

I can't imagine being a cop.

We should let em go live on some island and police themselves...

I'm consfused. Is an "anti-police protestor" someone who is opposed to protesting the police, or is an :anti-police protestor" someone who protests the police?

Nice to see support for the police.
