Great post John! I believe that if anything we ought to be encouraged by the success of Fireproof and Expelled. An indie film can be successful and now it's our turn to make our own culture-changing films!

I confess I've been tempted to do a little whining (not noticing that's what it was), but you addressed my objections and turned them properly on their heads! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Woo-hoo! Well said! Though, like Rael, I must confess that whining was my first reaction when I heard that Fireproof and Expelled were in the festival. Your response blew the doors off my arguments!
Congratulations on being in the finals!

Let me say right off the bat how impressed I am with your integrity, sir. I have never met you, but I am now more certain than ever that you possess a great amount of character. (How is it that one can always tell who is in Quixtar, eh?)
From the minute Angela told me about the narrowing down from 50 entries to 8 finalists, I was so excited that The Widow's Might stood up the the "giants" of Expelled and Fireproof! This truly is a credit to yours and the other filmmakers' abilities to create a genuinely good project.
Congratulations yet again! But this time, not for the film itself making it into the festival, but for the strong people behind the film persevering in a world in which it's all too easy to hastily throw in the towel.

John,
I am so proud of the Christian maturity you are continuing to show in everything you put your hand to!
Thank you for being an excellent example!

Right on! I know what your saying, and i think it definitely has to do with looking at the positive side instead of a negative side of things.
I agree with all you said, I especially agree with how these "Bigger" films/productions give the festival and all of the semi-finalists and the finalists major credibility!
Amen to that, and lets take audience choice!

Well said, Johnny Boy. And if Fireproof is the epitome of excellence, then you're all doomed, so keep reaching for the stars.

Furthermore, When someone says something along the lines of "You don't stand a chance against a real movie like Fireproof". That seems very insulting, especially considering that the other films do stand a chance, or they wouldn't have been accepted as semi-finalist.

GREAT post, John.
Even Indie Filmmakers need to watch for when they get narrow minded. Bad attitudes, forsaking creativity, and closing our eyes to learning from one another will get us into a lot of trouble, and tear the good in the movement down. It's a form of giving up, too, whether we realize it right away or not.
Everyone else's comments make very good points as well.
We have much to look forward to in the years to come! :D
Thanks again, John--convicting and clarifying! :D

John,
I don't see a problem with Fireproof (they are just a few films more experienced). I *do* however, have a problem with Expelled. Why? Because this is a Christian (check the "C" in SAICFF) film festival and Expelled is not a Christian film.

Andrew: Amen!
Rael: I'm glad this post was of service!
Kiefer: Thanks man! I appreciate it... You going to the SAICFA this year?
Amanda: Ha ha, you are right... Something about the process of starting a business and learning the principles of free enterprise really does change a person, and their family. Thanks!
Mike: HA! It's not a fight; it's a race to the finish. We both get to our target destinations to the glory of God, but who will be fastest?
Mrs. Powers: Thank you! I can't wait to see you guys again at the festival this year, and we're all looking forward to having Mike with us for the Academy again...
Tiffany: Ditto!
Cameron: You and I always seem to think a lot alike... What are the chances I can cast you in a movie? I would love to have you act in one of our films...
Shad: Thanks man! And thanks for what you and your family do for the Christian film industry. I appreciate your support of The Widow's Might through this whole thing. I hope Pendragon takes it though; those guys have been fightin' a pretty tough battle for three years!
Jeremiah: Agreed. Very tough call this year.
Derr: I think there is always room for improvement. While I have tremendous respect for Fireproof, I do because Fireproof shows that the Christian film industry is growing at a good clip. It's a perfect sign of growth, and I hope to constantly exhibit those same traits.
Cory: Ha ha! Ya' know, I had never though of it like that...
Kayleen: Glad you liked it! And I agree with you wholeheartedly. Say, when is the next DCFM meeting, anyway?
Richard: On the one hand, I completely agree that Expelled should have given Christ the glory as the uncontested creator of the universe. However, my post was more dealing with the issue of disqualification by way of being 'too good', or 'unbeatable'. Many people put Expelled in the same boat as Fireproof in that regard. While there may be other reasons for it's disqualification from a Christian film festival, excellence should never be one of them.
Everybody: Thanks everybody for the feedback! I love it!

I just remembered this post and went to read it again. LOL. Who would have known that The Widow's Might would be taking home the Audience Choice Award a month later? Well, God knew then but we didn't. He must have been smiling. And He added a desert... the Best of Festival Award.
God bless John, David, and the whole of HeuMoore team.
