While I am thankful that the boy was relatively unharmed, it is only the Disneyfied adolescents (of whatever age) who believe all creatures are just anthropomorphic beings of benign temperments just waiting to love and be loved by humans. Before the rise of modern cities and western civilization there was a more rational view that creatures and beasts were to be respected and given latitude because of their non human nature (frog v. scorpion; peter and the wolf; little red riding hood, anyone?). When you go into the wild and national parks are the wild, you must assume and prepare for the fact that territorial wild creatures may view you as a threat or a potential meal and plan accordingly. While national parks are designed for people to experience nature in a positive way, it is still nature which means that in order to make it a positive experience you must not act like a city slicker and assume that all the animals there are just waiting to sing kumbaya with you.

I am thinking that having the legal ability to carry guns in the public wilderness would be a good thing.
