The definition of a wedge issue is an issue that is popular among voters and favored by Republicans. The Democrats can't win on the issue, so their solution is to somehow make it appear unseemly for Republicans to bring it up. Their primary method for doing so is simply labeling them "wedge issues." Their secondary method is to argue that any time spent on these so-called "wedge issues" prevents "important business" from being discussed. The definition of "important business," of course, is any part of the Leftist agenda.
