Interesting perspective from the standpoint of someone who's never read the "old" Legion before.
A little bit of context - Levitz had been on the title less than a year, Giffen for only a few months by the time this came out. Levitz's big strength was how he handled a large cast, giving everyone the proper amount of time as needed. In the regular series, he'd have 3 or 4 plots going on at once, and when the "A" plot was wrapping up, the "B" plot from the last few issues would move to the front. A little of that pops up in the Great Darkness Saga.
Also, it had been several years since we had seen Darkseid, so it unexpected (plus this was pre-internet, so all we had to go on was the "next month" box). This was like Darkseid's re-introduction to the DC Universe. Try reading the book with that in mind, as if you didn't know who the big villain was from the start.
The "Cajun black guy" was actually from the part of Africa that had been colonized by the French. He was a brand new character and was still learning about his powers.
There are also cameos by just about everyone who had been a guest-star in the book over the years, but if you are unfamiliar with them, you probably skipped over them.
The epilogue came a couple years later in an Annual.
The back issues from the Levitz/Giffen period are well worth picking up.
