Kurt was quoting Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My(Into the Black)" when he wrote "It's better to burn out, than to fade away."
I say burn out by the way, because that means, even if no one knows or remembers that you worked hard and made a difference, and that the world would have been different if you were never here. Fading away just sounds like sitting somewhere, also unknown and forgotton, but doing absolutely nothing until you aren't here any more, and it doesn't really matter that you were in the first place.
I guess neither options all that cheerful though. :/
I forgot to add that I've had that song stuck in my head since you posted this too.
