Don't be discouraged. You don't need to work, or become a better person to get closer to God. The veil was torn in two when Christ died on the cross for our sins. The ripped veil signified the new covenant. Now God was accessible whereas before only the priests could go into His presence. Even in days of great misery and sin, Christ will be there for you. Just pray to Him and tell Him all your needs.
