This Catholic Journey

Gravatar You should express your concerns about the inadequacy of catechesis for children about baptism to the pastor. The last thing the Catholic Church needs is poorly catechized members.

Gravatar Praying for your entire family, Amber...

Gravatar Greetings Amber and congratulations on the upcoming event! It is sad that the glory of the occasion does not come through the catechesis, though that's all too common. One of my fondest memories is being god mother to my niece at her baptism in the 1960's when things were very personal, well prepared and lovely. I was much less fond of the baptism of my best friend's son in the 1980's when it was a cattle call of dozens of uninstructed families at the same service! It really varies and I'm thrilled at how excited the children are about their baptism.

If I could suggest, I'd print out a whole selection of pictures of the baptism of Jesus for them to enjoy. It will help them feel connected to his baptism and adds to that special time. I just did a google image search and there are many nice images, some traditional, some colorful and contemporary (even a coloring book image that is cool!) I loved this one:

You might show them that Jesus was baptized without his family being present, because that was when he was grown up and starting traveling in his teaching. Prayers for you and your family for a lovely and blessed sacramental service.
