Gravatar Hey, Tom... glad to see you put up a post on this guy. Looks like we libertarians have been stirrin' the sauce on this one... it needed to be told, and finally this story's gonna get some legs.

IMO, the reason the mainstream press has been ignoring this guy is: He used a gun in self-defense. Don't wanna get the anti-gun people agitated...

Gravatar Keith,

Actually, I suspect the main reason it hasn't had much attention yet is that the general "anti-capital punishment" people save their resources for people who are closer to execution than Maye is. But yeah, in the scheme of things I suspect that the gun angle, the "he shot a cop" angle, etc. are probably at play too.

Regards,
Tom

Gravatar Tookie shot people, and he had legions of supporters. I searched the NAACP, ACLU and CourtTV websites for "Cory Maye", and found... bupkis. Zilch. Nada.

This was last night, though; things may have changed. At least CBS did a story about him.

Gravatar Thanks, Tom.

BTW, we are considering doing drunken blogging nights more often, perhaps on a rotating site basis. Might be fun to form a drunken libertarian bloggers online party group. You in?

Gravatar Steve,

Drinking and blogging? How could I NOT be in?

Tom

Gravatar Enjoy the drunken blogging... while it's still legal, that is. Expect some congressman to introduce anti-BWI legislation - "for the children". *snicker*

Gravatar Tom - You got a couple of details a little wrong (RAdley has since found out there was a warrant, but for "persons unknown"; jury was not all-white; etc.) but thanks for following this one up. Hard to think of a worse miscarriage of "the big J" ... or more libertarian issues under one case ...

Gravatar Count me in too, Stephen and Tom.

Drinking and blogging is less dangerous than drinking and driving!

Gravatar I put Maye on wiki, and the web community is now doing a good job of keeping that entry accurate.

I'd feel comfortable using it as a reference point, now

Gravatar Thanks, Tom, keep up the good work on Maye - along with all the other fine blogs and writers who have noticed/initiated coverage. The more we learn, the more this really does seem like a horrible miscarriage of justice.

Gravatar I can define my opposition to the death penalty quite easily. The government should not be allowed to do anything that individuals within the society are not allowed to do. Killing in self defense is allowed, and cops and prison guards should be armed (and forgiven) for actions taken in 'self defense' of themselves and 'society'.

But, I have a hard time believing that an unarmed prisoner strapped to a gurney (or a chair, depending on your states murder predilection) presents any kind of a threat. And the killing of that person can only be counted as murder, making us no better than the murderer that we have exacted justice upon.

Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole is preferable, in my opinion, than making myself party to murder; even if the man that we are killing "needed it".

Gravatar Tom, I think yours is the first post I've seen on this issue that puts the "victim"s evil activities in the proper light.

Gravatar I'm concerned that the blogosphere may have a short attention span and that the Cory Maye case may sink back into obscurity. I assume most of the people here understand how outrageous it is that a man defending his daughter from unknown intruders in the middle of the night should end up on death row.

I spoke with Bob Evans yesterday, the lawyer now representing Maye. Evans tells me that he has printed out many of the weblog posts regarding Maye and taken them into his client. They greatly raised Maye's spirits. I suggested a letter writing campaign to Maye, so he could know that there are those of us who feel the government got it wrong on this one. Evans said he thought that was a very good idea. I've put up some details here:
