Yeah, I noticed that too -- longer than he had it AFTER the Marine Corps.
When I was in, there were two basic groups: Those of us who wore "high and tights," and those of us who pushed the regulations as hard as possible to have our hair look somewhat normal.
I always went high and tight since it was easy to maintain. I had some friends who showed up at drill with their hair trimmed to just barely within regs, so that they could hopefully have it looking like civilian hair for a week or so before they had to do it all over again the next month.
Once I got out of the Corps, I tried the "grow my hair down to my ass" bit, but just never got comfortable with it. Nowadays, I shave it, let it grow out until it starts to look all Fozzy-Bearish, then shave it again.
I don' think I ever met Drew Carey, but I just unearthed an old tape from about 1974, of Jay Leno doing a comedy routine at a tiny club in Cambridge, MA ... and the end of it includes me chatting with him about how funny he was, and him offering his home phone number for an interview I never ended up following up on. Does that count?
