The bitch is a fruitcake:
Speaking before the Pentecostal church, Palin painted the current war in Iraq as a messianic affair in which the United States could act out the will of the Lord.
"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," she exhorted the congregants. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

Congenial is not the word that comes to mind to describe an AIPAC approved pro-war Republican on a mission from God.

Well, of course.
The more I see this year, the more I think I may completely sit out this election.

She did give a pretty good speech, though.
Actually, in terms of political theatre, our favorite "libertarian Republican," Rudy, put on one hell of a fine performance last night.
If you ignore ... you know ... substance, ideas and values, then Palin and Rudy would make one hell of a combo four years from now. At least Republicans seem like they are going back to the rhetoric of "small government" on domestic issues, which is ... err ... an improvement, maybe.

This is a re-hash of the Klein meme, . . . no ?

FWIW, the book-banning source is Time:
Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. “She asked the library how she could go about banning books,” he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. “The librarian was aghast.” That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn’t be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving “full support” to the mayor.

Eric,
No.
The Klein meme (I hadn't noticed or read the editorial before writing my piece, btw) is that John McCain is on a rampage because his VP pick is being questioned/examined, and that this reveals bad things about John McCain's character.
My meme is that "libertarian Republicans" are wildly exaggerating Sarah Palin's "libertarian" credentials, which in reality are practically non-existent.

Thanks for your information--I wish you had more sources. We still cling to a hope that some good is going to come from a candidate. There's still a little pollyanna in all of us. In a way, I'm glad that pollyanna still lives. I would be much more worried if she was dead.
But the only way a libertarian could get to the top would be to pay lip service to all the things the establishment wants. I naturally wonder if she is just paying her dues to get there. She could, like Gorbachev, suddenly change if she ever gets to the top.
I don't think Palin will do that. However, she is definitely the most unique person to be on a ticket in a long time.

I am trying to ignore the election as much as possible, but the religious nut aspect (the Iraq War and the Alaska pipeline are Gods plan) is a bit unnerving, to say the least.

Indeed, Palin is no libertarian. Here's something I posted on a newsgroup in response to the excessive gushing over Palin I've been seeing not only among conservatives, but among some fairly hardcore libertarians:
"Sorry, but I'm not buying all the Palin is a "reformer" crap. It's certainly tempting to like her for various reasons, but she's not what she's being advertised as. Here are just a few (of many!) articles revealing a different point of view on Palin:

Some of these articles mention the Matanuska Maid dairy plant ordeal. I happen to be a good personal friend of the long-time CEO whom Palin
railroaded when her attempt to keep the plant open (to curry favor from certain politically connected groups) failed. Despite the pretty face and the rhetoric, she's a ruthless political animal with many discarded bodies left in her wake. Any pretense of being libertarian-leaning will quickly disappear as soon as she's in Washington. That she would happily team up with McCain should be all you need to know."
