Gravatar "Democrats may not need...."

You've got that paragraph in there twice.

Gravatar D'oh! Fixed, thanks.

Gravatar You may be interested in how this nomination may affect Lindsay Graham.

I found this from a South Carolina blogger via the Hotline.

Hint: The post is called "Will Lindsey get Liebermaned?"

Gravatar Thanks for the link, that was interesting. Meanwhile, news today has me wondering whether his Haynes "grilling" is just part of a Kabuki show. After seeing him in action re torture but then habeas corpus, I kind of think he wants to tinker with (the US statutory interpretation of) Geneva Conventions Common Article 3, make it seem like he's the voice of reason on that, and then "concede" on Haynes. It seems to me his problem with Haynes is not so much about what was done at Gitmo, as about "confusion " among U.S. troops about what could be done. Confusion wasn't good either, but I think it was hardly the main shortcoming at Gitmo. To be fair, though, I should probably try to read the hearings transcript, if there is one to be found on the Internet.

Gravatar I've been away from the news for five days, with only occasional painful glances at the Lebanon-Israel-Gaza headlines. What's happening with the Haynes nomination? Are hearings to be continued...? When is a committee vote expected?

Gravatar Nell, sorry for taking so long to respond. I don't know what's happening -- other than a pretty remarkable chorus of "no" editorials and letters to the editor across the country. Human Rights First just has their various position statements and background documents up, no update. Same at PFAW. If you learn some news, please let me know.
